I don't believe that the first image has anything to do with Hicks engines... that Hicks was James L. Hicks... with no presence in LA afaik...

Interesting, but the double doors and much wider frontage in the second photo suggest either a different location or a major renovation. The double doors would make more sense for moving large objects through.

Unless of course that second photo looks toward the back of the shop, rather than the front?!

The SF library has old business directories on line going way back (predecessor to the Yellow Pages)... I found James L Hicks in SF as early as 1862:

Frank appears in later listings, as a machinist/foreman/superintendent at James L Hicks... so "son" makes sense. And putting "Since 1860" on the storefront shows continuity from dad to son.
