I recently acquired a 2 cylinder 5 HP Buffalo 4 cycle engine. It is complete however I am trying to put a date on it. The tag has a patent date of January 27, 1903 so it is at least 1903 or older. It does have the unusual flywheel with the curved spokes which Buffalo had as early as 1901 and disconintued in 1906, when they went to the solid flywheel style. It has a serial # of 217. Does anyone else have curved spoke flywheel Buffalo? If so what is the serial #. I have read from the "Buffalo" special interest area on this site however a bit more info would be nice.

Bob Legnon has a 2 cylinder Buffalo, #110. The flywheel is straight spoked, it's an ignitor motor. I just picked up a 10hp 4cyl, #807. It has a solid flywheel, sparkplug igniton. Is yours ignitor or plug? I'm sure yours is an ealy engine.

My engine appears to be plug ignition, although I don't know how you would get the brass cover plate on the plug guard/timer bracket as it is not high enough for any type of spark plug, particularly the Champion 25's. Perhaps it is an ignitor and the apparatus is missing.

Buffalo ignitors were fun to watch but were evidently not that reliable. It seems many were converted to spark plug. Does the lever from the cam run at an angle towards the center of the cylinder? The short cover was for ignitors. I can get you in touch with Bob if you want pictures.

Thanks for the pictures and info. The cam rod is just a straight shaft, and it appears that all the levers and ignitor equipment was removed. I'll stick with the spark plugs for now. There's plenty to do with the engine and I'll save the ignitor reconstruction for a rainy day [month].

I have a twin cylinder Buffalo 2hp @750 rpm--typA, serial# 168 with a mixing tube carb & patent date of 1871.
I am looking to buy a 5-8 hp twin if available for another replica of the 1894 motor-sailor I have. Any condition would be acceptable as long as it is all there. A marine transmission is essential as well.
Please contact me if you have or know where one is etc. Thanx---Hugh Baird

Just picked up a buffalo 2hp from Dick Alcock. He had to make the pattern for the brass igniters cover and housing , the one way clutch for igniters, igniter cams. The buffalo was a basket kit I got from coolsprings pa in 2016 He wanted a winter project. He did a magnificent job his machine skills are off the chart. So I got back my old 2 hp in running condition. Will send pictures later.
