I have a Stuart Marine Gearbox, serial number 25688. Its a reverse gear. The gear box is separate from the engine. It is slipping in forward but plenty pull in reverse. Any ideas what the problem could be and where, if necessary, I could get parts?

Hello
I'm a newcomer so beware. I've read in the manual for the smaller Stuart the R3M that the clutches would wear and slip if the change lever was used to control speed. Perhaps this is what has happened in your case. The clutches are cone clutches I understand. Generally parts are quite difficult to find and the present stock holder in the UK has a reputation for poor service.
Try the marine engine section of http://www.stationary-engine.net they have several threads that could help you.
I'm picking up a P5ME next week. That has a siezed gearbox so perhaps we will be comparing notes as time goes on. I do have a manual for the R3M that might assist you some and I'm seeking the same for the P5M. Also I do have spare parts lists with diagrams.

Good luck

Hello guys, sorry for butting in on your conversation but would it be feasible to place a shim or two between the cone on the crank and the bearing behind it to bring the cone closer the outer cone, what do you think i thought its a possible solution to overcome the wear between the two cones. effectively taking up the slack so to speek. good luck steve,
