I am building a 16 FT, flat bottom, wood plank, hard chine boat. I have a Gray ,model U, three HP, two cycle, marine engine I will install in it. I have a clutch to put between the engine and the prop shaft. My three blade 13 x 13 LH prop has a front taper diameter of 1.125 and a rear taper diameter of 1.000. If I put the engine in the center of the boat, the prop may be in the area of six FT or less (not designed yet). What would be a minimum and reasonable shaft diameter?

We use 1", usually close to 6' in our boats. You can get a 1 1/8 to 1" bushing from prop shops, the nylon material works fine. The first prop I had for my boat was 1 1/8, I welded the shaft and machined the taper, before I knew the bushings were available.
