Have bought the replacement manual from this site-- but the manual doesn't have torque settings for head and manifold.

Are there any "Rules of Thumb" for 4 cyl low compression flatheads like a Universal?

The rules of thumb relate to the size of the bolts,so what bolts do you have?

I found that torquing down the head once is not good enough. I was told ( and I did it) to torque the head and then run the engine to warm it up well and then re-torque the head . When you do it the second time, it feels as if you had not torqued the bolts the first time. Weird but it works.
The engine that I worked on was a 6 cylinder Buchahan based on a Hercules block ( very similar to a Chris Craft) 1950 era engine.

Gary,

If you don't know what class of bolt you have you "should" be able to detirmine the class of bolt by the radial lines on the head, but I am not sure when that convention was started... may not apply to the bolts on your engine... see attached.
