have just about got my 14' clausen craft ready for the water but my dog clutch won't stay in engaged, i push it in with the engine running and it just slips back out to neutral each time.i thought the surfaces may have been too oily but that doesn't seem to be the case. won't is the lubrication for these things?

Ross, The boat needs to be in the water for the clutch to work properly. It needs the thust from the Prop to push it forward & keep it engaged. Out of the water it will just slip out.

Cheers Dave

Ross ,
I was told many years ago that you use a blend of oil/kerosene at a ratio of 2:1 but forget which way round.

well, my clausen craft didn't sink when i put it in the water, only a couple of minor problems which have been fixed. now for the question, the motor runs fine but backfires occasionally, not so much a problem as an annoyance, does anyone have any ideas as to why or is this to be expected?

Hi Ross,
They will backfire when cold.. If it backfires when hot just adjust the Mixture screw out a fraction of a turn. Backfiring indicates too lean. Once you have the mixture set you should never have to alter it. Where do you live Ross?
Cheers,

Dave

that is what puzzles me, it is not continually backfiring, just every now and then when it is hot.
I live down in the Jervis Bay area.
you can have a look at the boat here

I have experienced an engine like that backfiring intermittently despite tuning. It was sucking air into the crankcase's mixture via worn front main bearing. You may want to check the up-down freeplay in the flywheel. You should not feel a knock, seems to be the blaxland's Achilles heel. Although the design allows for a bearing 'blue & scrape' then remove some crankcase-halve shims. [The centre bearing always wears much slower than the front, therefore may need the most scraping. ] Otherwise; hopefully it just needs tuning! Good pics, looks like a semi-planing hull!?
Good luck!
Dog clutch!?!? A lot of people use this name. I understand that putt putts use only cone-clutch, or finger-clutch [except for inside some reversing gearboxes that 'Bang' into gear, where 2 tenon-like dogs engage into mortise-like slots .]Anyhoo; i may be being unnecessarily technical here.

Good job Ross, she looks lovely. My Blaxland 3.5 backfires every now and then too. It's pretty old and tired though and needs constant attention. None of this set and forget stuff that Dave suggests

Ross, You may also care to check the connections on the plug leads, clean and reset /replace the plugs? Your boat would certainly improve the looks of JB. Regards.

you could be right about the leads just thinking about it. I have never been happy with the connectors to the plugs so i will change them and try it again. the backfiring has been fairly random so it sounds like it could be it.
thanks
Ross

changed the spark plug connectors and took it out today, not a backfire the whole time. the boat runs better than i could have imagined, easy starting, quite a nice stable little boat. had a great day out.
thank you everyone for your help
Ross
