This is my first posting on this site. I shall begin building a 13' 6" inboard skiff (the "Victor Slocum" by William Atkin) in April 2006. Would really like to use a top quality NEW inboard gasoline engine with transmission in this boat. Can anyone tell me if the Blaxland "Pup" or other suitable engine for this boat is still being manufactured? Many thanks!!

Hi, I'm new to this forum, I have a circa 1950's clinker hull open launch powered by a Blaxland 3.5 HP single cylinder inboard engine. I rescued this boat from a boat hire business on the Central Coast of NSW. I have restored it to the best of my limited ability and have enjoyed many hours on the water with her. The engine however was badly worn when I got it and I did manage to get it going but now its needs real work. Has anyone used the Blaxland Chapman Marine contact that Julian posted back in January (o2 65583182) and where they useful? I know of another contact at Bensville NSW, has anyone used them? Cheers, Bruce.

A Blaxland has a 'reverse gear' of sorts. Many years ago I practiced doing it with a TXRR (two cylinder). Being an two stoke, the entire engine can be made to run in reverse - there was a notch on the magneto mount to assist. I don't know if these was 'standard' or even recomended.

Reverse consisted of idling, loosening the magneto retaining screw, then shorting the magneto with the stop button (carefully :-), turning the magneto about 15 degrees until the locating pin dropped into the other notch, and then before the engine stopped rotating completely, letting go of the stop button on the magneto. If you got the timing right, the engine would fire out of sequence and start spinning in reverse. You could then re-engage the clutch and throttle up.

You certainly couldn't do this quickly, not quick enough to use reverse as a brake.
In fact I can't think of any reason to actually need to do this, that couldn't be taken care of with a push and drifting out.

But the engine will definately operate in reverse. (And the boat didn't handle very well backwards either :-)

The old catalogue I have says a forward/reverse gearbox is available as an option.

Don't know where you can get any manuals but I have a CLAE Fisherman and my understanding is that the tension on the gearbox horizontal shaft can be adjusted easily.
With gears in neutral tighten the two inner brass nuts on each side (4 nuts)then tighten the outer nuts (4).
Have'nt tried it myself yet so hope it works.
I'm in Sydney also.

Neil, there is also a spring loaded pin that allows a FWD ring in the gear box to rotate/thread around and click the pin back into machined holes right round the ring. Any Ideas. Would the fwd end of the gear box have a clutch or is it tention from the brass nuts you refered to? Sutherland Shire

Hi Trevor,
Sorry can't answer that one.
My CLAE gearbox and motor are as one .No clutch just forward /neutral/reverse.
I believe they are very similar to Simplex boxes which are still manufactured .Simplex Motor Co Seven Hills Sydney.Ph 96246704.
You might also try reposting on this site under 'gears' as your enquiry appears under Blaxland and would escape many members notice.
Regards,Neil

Hi, we have the Blaxland twin in a 40's clinker built boat that was recently rebuilt and cannot get it to run well. Is there any way to change the timing? The magneto seems to only sit in one position.
Any help appreciated

Before you go changing the timing ,ascertain that it is correct, otherwise you will end up all over the shop
First rotate the motor to tdc on #1 cyl
remove the magneto and check that the drive pin
is aligned with the timing mark on the rear most
point on the top face of the cast iron magneto
mount/drive assy.Mark the fly wheel on the outer circumference with a permanent marker to line up
with the center of the water pump piston housing.
Second rotate the fly wheel counter clock wise
about 1/4 turn, then slowly rotate it back until
you are 2 and 1/4 inches before tdc.At this point
the points should just be opening.
If these two things are correct ,your problem lies elsewhere.
If not,one or both will have to be reset, not hard

David,

You mention that the magneto will only sit in one position. The twins are set up with two 'notches' for the magneto (one for forward and one for reverse running). Typically the forward position is with the magneto perpendicular to the crankshaft and about 25 degrees for reverse runnng (I'm sure someone call tell us the actual angle). To add to the confusion (at least with my motor) 'forward' running is clockwise (i.e opposite to the arrow on the flywheel). If you have the magneto set up on the above basis and have spark then I'd be surprisd if the problems you have are with timing. Regards Laurie

Hi All
I have a Blaxland Chap 10Hp twin which has lost one of the windings of its lucas sr magneto, possibly its last spark went up my left arm when i stupidly put my hand on top of one of the plug while testing the motor, it has been siting ever since, some 2 years now.
Moisture in the coil has done the damage and i was hoping someone knows where i can get another one from, or a good rewind.
She is close to float and run with a new coil

Regards

I still think my computer is suss though.
Maybe a bit of high voltage dc might encourage
a better performance out of it.
Or it might just let out the smoke that makes all
things electrical work.
Have you noticed that when you let the smoke out
these things just stop?

Todd It is a cone clutch , I start the engine let it idle then engage and it alwasy goes in the a clunk sounds awefull. I think you mentioned a finger clutch before and that this one slips into gear smoother am I correct . I can disconnect and send to you would love a finger clutch if it would be better.

Maree, It could be as simple as a cable or linkage adjustment to the gearbox.
I had a simlar problem with a Yanmar gearbox which turned out to be the clutch. It started slipping badly two hours into the trip.To get home I had to continually push forward on the gear leaver with my foot to make the clutch engage.Try doing that to see if it is the clutch.
Start motor/select forward gear/push hard on the gear linkage holding it in forward. If it moves forward you'll need to address the clutch. It's important not slip the clutch when anchoring or coming into port because these clutches have to contend with rusted surfaces which are like sand paper and the clutch is ground away every time you slip it.
If your gearbox is anything like the yanmar gearbox,it has a two sided clutch plate, one for forward and other for reverse. When I replaced my clutch plate I came to realise that in a pinch you could turn the plate around with the worn side to the rear and the best side for the main forward drive, naturally reverse ceases to work.
You will need to be specific about your gear box identity. Any numbers or markings to assist with identifying the particular model for any parts you might need.
Hope this helps.
Allen

Can new cylinders for a Blaxland twin still be purchased?
I recall that some years ago there were some even though manufacture had ceased.
At present I have a single in my 13 foot boat and it goes very well indeed, so for my next boat, which is bigger, I have found a complete twin, but the cylinders are very old. It's a lot of work to install it, and I don't feel confident that it will last long.
Any info, please?

Hullo Todd,
Thanks for your advice on getting Blaxland spares. The only contact info that I could find was back in 2006. Is this current?
Way back, I dealt with Ray Jacobs, But I heard that his son had taken over selling the remaining stock. I think his name was Brett. Is this the one, and the 2006 phone number his?

Can any one tell me someone who can help me with poor compression for a Blaxland Champman single cylinder motor in South Australia, (as close to Murray Bridge as possible). When we tested it it only is 75 and I have been told that it should be around 125. This would explain why I can get her going out of the water, but when I put it in gear in the river it conks out.Really would love some advice Paul

Hi - the old trick for 4 strokes was to dose the cylinder with < teaspoon 30 grade oil and see if the compression came up - showed if the problem was rings, or valves/head gasket. Try it even on a valveless 2 stroke with no head gasket to confirm if the rings are the problem. Throttle must be wide open and the cranking speed adequate. Also, is the cylinder to base gasket the correct thickness? Too thick a gasket will change port timing and lower compression. (Too thin a gasket will have the top piston ring crash into the cylinder wear ridge). This is why you do not throw out any old gaskets until the engine rebuild has been proved OK.

Hello
i have a problem with my super pup and need help from the knowledgeable people here.
I have stripped my motor down and have derusted and painted, i have not touched the main bearings at all. when i went to put it back together with correct gaskets i found that the crankcases with the crank fitted now have a gap of about 4 mm, and i dont understand how this could be, i dont think the bearings would have expanded and they are still flush with the top of the cases, if i tightened them down even with a 2mm gasket the crank will not turn at all, i can not understand how this has happened and help would be greatly. appreciated.

Quinton, Re Weed on propo: Small OMC outboards used to have a weed free propellor available. It's hard for me to desribe theshape in words but they had a more acute angle on the leading edge of the blades.Depending on the type of weeed encountered they were reasonbly effective. If it is an ongojng problem for you could seek advice from Austral Props. This is not aimed at you or other OME folks as we are all wise and love our fish habitats but in NSW we have laws that prohibit the harming of seagrass and I'm constantly unimpressed by the folk who insist on dredging through weed beds. Cheers, Laurie.

From memory I think Quinton has a 16 ft plywood launch with a 5/7 Blaxland Twin therefore would have to stay with the designated prop.
Only way is to avoid weed area or throw the motor into neutral .
It would not be nice ,as Laurie suggests ,to go any distance through weed beds .

To Neil and Laurie .
Many thanks for the hints , have contacted the props people awaiting reply . Would you believe it the weed cutters arrived to day . It seems that outboards have no problems in the water but deep keel and inboards its another matter . The weed wraps around the shaft just before the prop evn going into neautral does not allow the weed to come of , its a bugger as the lake is 6 kms around and now full and would be lovely to go all around especially as it is only 1km from home . Would love to start a old motor boat register for Victoria any ideas on how to go about it there must be a few around. Quinton

Quinton, It appears that even a 'weed free prop may not assist in these circumstances (unless you can reduce the space betwen the stern gland and the prop to prevent the weed becoming wrapped around the shaft).

As for an OME register in Victoria why not go for the whole of OZ. I have no idea how to set up a website but I'm sure someone can help? Laurie.

Hi everybody.
Some low life has stolen a friends putt putt
from its mooring on the main wharf at Hardys bay
on the Central Coast just north of Sydney.
It has a dark blue cover, and is painted red, whit and blue.(though this will probably be changed
by the "a holes" who knocked it off)
It has a 3 1/2 hp Blaxland single which has just
been fully rebuilt to new specs.
They dont have the magneto,so if you hear of
someone after one or trying to unload the motor
could you let me know so we can dispense a bit
of "river justice"
Cheers

Update on putter
Its was found washed up on the rocks about couple of miles away.
Seem as though it was taken for a joy ride, but not
having the maggy in it,it was abandoned and just let drift with the outgoing tide
