I have a dismantled Simplex single that is free to a good home.

All components are there (except carburettor and magneto).

Downside is that the gearbox was left open and is rusted solid, but should free up given time and treatment.

Engine is in Paynesville Victoria. Will box it if you pay the freight.

Alternatively it is going to the scrap dealer.

Hi Kevin,

For a start a drum large enough to put it in filled with mollasses and water. Ratio isn't critical perhaps 30% or more mollasses.

Will take a few weeks. If it is working properly then you will see a foamy scum appear on the top.

This will get it started.

Mollasses can be had from horse supply places.

Cheers,

Mark

Sorry Kevin,

Forgot to mention if there are any non-ferrous parts you will need to remove them first. Aluminium especially and brass/bronze as well although they take a bit longer to dissolve.

Cheers,

Mark

Forgot to mention Kevin if there are any non-ferrous parts then remove them first. Aluminium will dissolve quite quickly, brass/bronze somewhat slower.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
By the amount of rust in there, apart from the clutch jaws, I don't know how much brass or bronze is in there. Either way if I do nothing, can't fix it, and if some brass or bronze goes, hopefully I can replace them. Supposedly still able to get parts for them.

2 weeks in the electrolisis tank cleaned up the rust pretty well. Then a soak with a mix of ATF and Acetone,

I had it set up with a drip feed

So far I have been able to remove the final drive shaft and gear change lever.

Next challange is to rremove crankshaft and gear box.

Regards
Kevin

There are bronze bushes in the planetary gears ,but standard size ,can be obtained from any bearing supplier.

Well a little more progress, got the gearbox and crankshaft out. Now put away till I can spend more time on it. Gearbox soaking in ATF and Acetone, trying to loosen it up.

Thanks Todd, good to know. I am waiting on a manual from Simplex in Sydney.
Dont supose you have any info/documents on pulling gear box apart?

Regards
Kev.

Thanks Todd, hoping to not spend quite as much on a display type engine (running), I have got some stuff off the before and very good. Cheers.

Hi,
I am about to fit my single cylinder Simplex to my 16 ft putter and have heard that the exhaust outlet should be lower than the exhaust manifold, can anybody please advise if this is absolutely necessary

What you should try to do, is to prevent water from coming back in the exhaust system and into the engine.
The height difference between the manifold outlet and the exhaust outlet is a subject of some discussion, but just keep the water flowing downhill.
In my boat the muffler is about 30% below the water line - so I made an arrangement to drain the muffler when I get the boat up out of the water. It's important not to have any obstruction in the exhaust system of a 2 cycle engine otherwise it will be very difficult to start. But once running it's Ok to water in the exhaust system cooling the whole thing.
