I just purchased an old Atlantic 3 hp inboard and had it running this past week-end after about 20 hours of cleaning greasing figuring out the ignition system. After running it on and off for about 2 hours the connecting rod broke off the crank shaft. After inspection it appears to have been cracked for some time as the break was not newly exposed metal.

Does anyone have or know where I can look for a new connecting rod. I also need a new float for the carb.

You should be able to get a new one from Lunenburg Foundry in Nova Scotia.

Hi,

I have a 5hp Acadia in my 20' motorboat.

There is a crack at the back of the water jacket and water seeps out when she's running, not a lot, just enough to put off a little steam.

Is it safe to run the engine like this, it still runs perfect and gets lots of water.
Also, can I get the crack welded?

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Ira, I just ran into your request for advice. Didn't see any comment. In my opinion don't try to weld. Use epoxy and it should work fine. Salt water can crack a cast iron water jacket if it is allowed to dry out and salt poisened iron does not take to welding very well. There should be little or no water pressure on the crack so clean it up down to bare metal and epoxy should last years if you get a good bond.
