I have been asked a couple of times what the pipe plug in the side of the head on a Ferro Special is for.
From reading the description in the Ferro manual then looking at the attached pic I have figured out that the design intent was an audible as well as a visible whistle.
If the operator was blowing the whistle and getting no response all that was needed was to hold a lit match by the whistle when blowing it.
Quote from the Ferro manual. "A check valve catches a minute part of every explosion and holds it in a storage tank".
Hmmm fuel and air at around 14.7 to 1 air fuel ratio.
Flames! And maybe more...

See illustration from the Ferro manual below

NEATO Ernie - I just looked at my Special but it does not have the outlet. I have always dated it to be 1908/1910. What is the date on the catalog?

Do you suppose an attorney suggested that storing an optimally explosion ready mixture in a pressurized tank was not such a good idea?

Cheers

No date on the document.
It does refer to the 1909 Ferro Treatise so I would guess is 1909 or later
