Does anybody know when American Bosch stopped using "the Red D***l" as their sign or logo ?

I believe Splitdorf used that logo and that Bosch may have perpetuated it after taking over while they continued to produce some Splitdorf models. I could be wrong about that; you probably should ask over on Smokstak. What is the model number on yours?

In many years of collecting Old Marine Engines I had never seen one of these BA Bosch magnetos, a few weeks ago this little Carlyle Bud-E twin showed up and I researched the magneto and found very little information.
I have a copy of original 1915 catalog with this magneto and engine, it is also the smallest Bosch magneto made ?

Since it says Made in USA it is after the start of WWI when the US took over the German Bosch plant in Massachusetts. The BA were a series of 'miniature' magnetos primarily used on small motorcycles but also found applications on other small engines, mostly one cylinder units.

This article says Bosch US first mfgr was 1912 ?

http://www.bosch.com/media/com/bosch_group/history/documents/firmenchronik/Bosch_History_at_a_Glance.pdf

This 1915 ad shows the BA bosch, the Bud-E came with copies of original catalogs dated 1915 same photo as in ad below.

bud15

I stopped searching the early American Bosch magnetos and trying to put a date on each mag, just no adequate verifiable original dated material-- so far ??

Yes, the German Robert Bosch established a Springfield plant in 1912 manufacturing as Robert Bosch to avoid shipping and import tariffs. After the war broke out the US government took the plant and the name 'American Bosch' was used for many years to differentiate from the German Bosch. I trademark changed at the same time from 'Fritz the Flyer' to the 'AB'. The early BA seem to have been made in this era as some are marked Bosch and some American Bosch. Bosch numbered magnetos sequentially and 1,000,000 was in 1911. That is all I know since I have slept since I learned it.

Thanks for straightening things out George; it is "the Flyer" that Bosch used in their adverts.

Splitdorf had their own fella!

A quote from Robert Bosch: "I don't pay good wages because I have a lot of money, I have a lot of money because I pay good wages".

Some info on the BA1/BA2 (1 cylinder vs. 2 cylinders?) here:

I was wrong.....The Flyer was with Bosch until 1929-1930 but I still don't know when my magneto was made -and where. When I know that I'm getting closer to solve my problem.

To my knowledge, all German Bosch made in USA are stamped Bosch New York and all American Bosch are marked USA somewhere. The early German Bosch are marked Germany. I believe that American Bosch continued with sequential serial numbers as did German Bosch as they continued to be a prolific builder for the remainder of WWI and beyond.

Could it be that Bosch supplied mags without obvious markings for the Scandinavian market, or parts of it? Things German weren't too popular in Denmark for example, after the little disagreement over Schleswig-Holstein!

But more to the point, are we sure this mag is original to the Gray engine, and if so, therefore came supplied from the USA? Or was it fitted in Sweden, either by a/the Gray agent, or just someone who owned the engine at some point?

I don't know if Gray had any agent in Sweden/Norway before WWII after that we have several Gray Phantoms but before I have'nt heard of anyone. Perhaps someone on the forum knows if they were represented in scandinavia ? Before WWI german Bosch were common during and after SEM was the only alternative.
One more odd thing is the 7 ft long propellershaft the propeller, shifthandle and everything around that is original Gray if it was taken home with an returning swede why carry that stuff all the way ? He could easily get that here.

Around the propeller hub is the obvious first place to lock, but I understood your post at 3:17pm to mean that you had already found Gray markings on those parts(?)
