I have a 6 volt positive ground Gray Maine 4cyl
first attempt to start this spring the engine rolled a few times didi not fire
second time engine fired and the starter locked up
took it to rebuild shop, they put on anew solonoid and rear bearing
installed it, same thing, when it fires and Irelease the starter button the starter locks up
back to the shop, this time the armature is bent
new armature, installed the starter and it fires the starter locked up
is there a different solonoid for positive ground system? could I have a bad solonoid? I took pics before removing it the first time so I know I attatched the wires the way they came off
thanks in advance
Joe

You could try and make sure that the bendix is working properly. The starter is turning in the right direction because you managed to start the engine. The bendix should mover very freely with no drag at all.

I'm unsure what locks up means; does the engine continue to run with the starter engaged, or the engine runs until next start cycle and the starter is someway jammed but not to the flywheel? Did this starter ever work correctly on this engine? Is this an inertia Bendix or a pre-engagement type drive.
I know it is clear to you but I'm unable to paint a picture of your situation in order to offer solutions. But 6v solenoids are not polarity sensitive.
