Modern oils come with a precise additive package. The performance level of the additive package is indicated by an API rating listed on the bottle, usually two or three times including a small circle, about 5/8" diameter, which might say "API service SN" SN being the latest upgrade. If it is followed by "/CF" that indicates compression fired and is suitable for diesels as well as gasoline engines. You can actually ruin that additive package by introducing another additive to that precise formula.

There is one exception. If an engine is on it's last leg, extremely worn rings and/or bearings, you can milk a little more life out of it by using a viscosity enhancer (STP). In that case you would a straight 30 weight oil if you were using a multi-grade. Note that this is a last resort measure and not a preventative one. For good maintenance keep your oil changed.
