This week in a local boatyard, I found an old marinized motor, with no identification readily apparent. It is rumoured to be an Apperson, but who knows...
This is a four cylinder motor, T head valves with external pushrods. The crankcase is aluminum and the steel piston barrels are green. My semi-educated guess is that the motor dates between 1915 and 1920. The generator and starter are Bijur, the distributor is Delco and the carb is a thumping big brass Rayfield. The starter is a chain drive off the front of the motor, by means of a rachet drive. A direct drive transmission is attached, the tailshaft is square, and it is displayed on a substantial engine stand, and may be for sale. I have taken some photos but they won't be ready for some days. The motor is clean and looks like it could be fired up. Any guesses? |

Hmm. I'll have to turn on the ESP, like Miss Cleo. The engine is...located in a boatyard...in
Merrickville, Ontario. It's inside a machine shop in the main floor of the building... Right! Unless this is one heck of a coincidence, I a m very familiar with the engine you are describing.
It is indeed an Apperson, built about 1918-1919. The engine was removed from smashed up Apperson roadster and was intended to be installed in a home built cruiser in the early 1920's. The cruiser project was delayed (as such projects oftern are) for about fifteen years and was completed only about 1939, by which time the owner had found a more practical power plant(a Kermath, I think). The Apperson remained in the garage and was never installed in a boat. I think the engine is a performance engine and I don't think it would have been to happy in a old style displacement hulled cruiser. The original owner's grandson (?) owns the engine and still uses the cruiser. |

Steve Fox (or Miss Cleo as you prefer):you are absolutely right on all account. I feel that the engine (if rebuildable) would be much more valuable for the present owner if it were sold to someone with an Apperson who needed an engine. No one in their right mind would want to put such an engine in a boat today. Lots of stuff on Google.com but since it's not my baby, I'll pass it on. Thanks for the advise. Bob sends |
