Chuck,
I can't find anything on a S12A Volvo. I will check with a friend who is familiar with Volvo and see what he knows.
Are you sure it is Volvo? Could it be a Penta from before they became Volvo-Penta?
Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,

It is a Penta that looks like a one lunger with a spoked fly wheel, magneto, piston type water pump, and a forward/reverse gear box attached. Came out of a sail boat from overseas. Looks like a dynamo starter might be used with a belt around the flywheel. need a carb. and the piston is stuck no other damage that I can see. It looks
to be a 4 cycle engine.

Would welcome any help anyone can give.

Chuck

Chuck,

There was an engine like that at the Mystic Seaport show two years ago, running. I know I had some pictures of it, but I can't find them now (maybe someone else has some).

It was listed as a:

Atkenbolaget Penta
5.5HP
Gptjembirg, Sweden
Model F12A Serial No. 3579

Maybe the "F" is a mistake... it even has a serial number close to yours. The owner was from Connecticut, you could get his address from the show index, or I could send it to you off the board.

Regards,
Andrew

Andrew,
The pick of the Penta at Mystic would have been in the ones I sent you from 2000 Mystic. I can't find my origionals either. I looked at the site from the museum link above. The pic that looks like the one at Mystic is here. http://m1.533.telia.com/~u53304146/i029.jpg
It was about 5 hp and 2 stroke. Neat little engine.
Hope this helps

Hello engine enthusiasts, my friend has a volvo penta 3cyl diesel he has just rebuilt, he believes it is the (model no. 2003) but needs to find out the tappet settings and also if anyone might have a wiring diagram (he has the wiring loom) I realise this is not defined as an old marine engine but thought someone might help.
Thanks Alan.

Gary it sounds like you already found the problem.
there are either loose fittings or the need for a new injector. Im sure there are repair kits, but it sounds like you are a remove and replace kind of person. Nows it the time to take care of it.

Hi there

Anyone got a remedy for a sticky gear button? Our Volvo 2003 cockpit control stick works fine, but once the button is pressed in to rev up the engine to start, it now needs fingernails or pliers to get it to pop out so the engine can engage forward or astern. We have tried WD40, but the button itself seems to be degrading - maybe the UV light or whatever. Any suggestions welcome!

Does anyone have any information regarding this motor; size, horsepower, id number so i can begin to rebuilt it.

Hi, I Am looking for technical help !!
I have a sailboat 85 equipped with Volvo Penta 2002.
I have problems with cold start the engine ( after 8 hours of no working). I have to maintain starter for roughly 100 turns before the engine starts. .. And big white fume appears at the begenning ( 15 seconds )of start elone..
Nobody found what it is.
I purge the diesel pump , pressure pipes, change the filter...
The sailboat was used continiusly in Lac Champlain (NY+VT). The motor seems in very good shape. It has minor oil linkings , and never black fume from the exhaust.
Thank's

Lon

White smoke sounds like slow cranking speed or low compression, if it's cranking fast it may need internal work.

Andrew I have an Allied 39 sloop with a Volvo model #2003. This is not the original motor in this boat, we are refitting the boat and I will be working on the motor soon. You said you sell the manual for this motor. I will need all the settings, piping dia. and electrical dia. Is this manual available? Please email me if it is.
Thanks John [email protected]

Another note on my Volvo 2003. After a large light and magnifier, I was able to get the Numbers off the sticker. I know the Model: 2003 would the serial # tell me what year it is? Would anyone know what the serial number means? What HP is this motor.
Thanks John [email protected]

John,

The model 2003 is the 3 cylinder version of the 2000 series.

We sell the manuals for the 2000 series on the MarineEngine.com site, see the bottom of the page at this link.

Perfect! Thanks for the help. I'll get these ordered. With a little heat on board, I'll get this motor overhauled through this winter season. I'll assume through my serial number, I'll find the year it was manufactured.
As a post above noted,I also hear parts are expensive. I wonder if it wouldn't (almost) be cheaper to re-power with a new motor.
Thanks
John
