A useful discussion about 2 cycle engine main bearing grease occurred February 2007 in the Blaxland section.

I reported success using NLGI grade 4 grease because this very heavy grease does not easily squeeze out and add to a messy bilge. Less grease is needed as the grease stays put. Lubriplate 115 and Penrite Water Pump Grease are listed as grade 4 and are available in small packages. I use Lubriplate 115.

I wonder if others have tried grade 4 grease and if so what has been their experience.

A minor difficulty occurs because grade 4 grease does not feed easily using hand turn grease cups. Dispro users often pipe grease cups from a bulkhead and as a result may experience difficulty.

I use a small “strap wrench” to turn grease cups as illustrated by the attached image. This solves the problem and provides a crude method to meter quantity. Using ¼” pipe (.5/16”ID) one quarter turn feeds one cubic centimeter as illustrated.

When converting to grade 4 grease it’s important to ensure the feed pipes are full of grease without air pockets.

I tried it and WILL NOT use it again. I literally had to take the engine apart to clean out the main bearing grease passages. A messy bilge is better than poor lubricated mains. I went way beyond the stap wrench and used a pair of 18 inch channel lock pliers. The end result was grease cups that are very tight onto what ever they are scewed onto or into and poorly lubricated main bearings. I went back to ordinay wheel bearing grease and made a small shield around each main bearing and just wipe it out after each run. Also if grease is coming out of the bearing it is for sure getting in.
