I have a Sabb 8HP diesel with the dynastart, like the ones on the Volvo MD** engines. The voltage regulator is very corroded, beyond repair. Price quoted for replacement was $1200.00.
So I have found what appears to be a solution to this problem.
http://www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?s=c5da0f8072f889fe1183becac48e33ca&showtopic=5403&st=20
It involves replacing the old voltage regulator (Bosh part# 0 190 219 001)
old regulator
With this bosch part# 1 199 980 002
new regulator
and since it does not have an internal solenoid, an external one is required - bosch part# 0 332 002 155
new solenoid
Here is what the wiring diagram looks like-
drawing
Any comments/suggestions very welcome on this...

By the way,
Does anyone know what gauge wires (AWG) are
here in the diagram? Looks like a degree sign and
also length in meters...
Here is an excerpt from the Sabb manual-
diagram

I guess its the square sign rather than degree, to denote cross section area. So 2.5mm sq = the cable could consist of several strands which total up to 2.5mm cross sectional area.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did finish the install and it works just fine. Charging light starts to come on at low RPM, starter works fine and dandy. Sure beats the price of the original regulator.

Good to hear of your success. I always thought that if I was stuck with that problem I could get a regulator from a 12v vw beetle and get around the silly dynastart price.

Hi All, you need to use a voltage regulator with a 15 amp cutout specially made for dynastarts and starter-regulators! VW or old car/ tractor regulator cutouts are at 25 amps and will cook the field windings! starter regulators were also used on horizontal shaft lawn tractors, golf carts and stationary engines! The bosch dynastarts were more heavy duty as designed for diesel engines. P

Better late then never...

"25 degrees" indeed is the cross section of the cable core in square 25 mm (mm2) and the maximum length is 2 meters. It is 25 mm2 (and not 2.5 mm2) because of the high current when the dynastart acts as a starter.

Not sure about a supplier, but you should be able to take it in to a local electric shop and have it re-wound/rebuilt.
