Why is that if the powerplant bolted down inside your boat is an "engine" and if you clamp one out the back it is called a "motor"?

Eric ,
I have my Blaxland Twin motor in my 'timber boat'
and my twin outboard engines on my 'wooden boat'.
Confusing isn't it ?

Cheers.
Neil

Same reason houses burn down and cars burn up.

Our way a timber boat is a wooden boat built with sawn frames from natural curved wood, matching the curve of the wood with the curve of the boat lines. As opposed to latted boat where the frames are steamed (also known as plied timbers)

Keith ,
Timber in the UK , Australia New Zealand etc is the correct term for cut/sawn wood.
In U.S. and Canada it is lumber .
Therefore I have a timber boat , a wooden boat an engine and a motor.

Motors runs with electric power source.

Engines runs with fuel source.

While Keith's definitions are what is published and in common usage by non-engine folks, I think that most engine people agree that a motor should NOT be used except on either an internal combustion device or a machine that converts non-electrical energy into motion; like steam or compressed air.

And a careful reading of the two definitions, "such a machine distinguished from an electric . . . . motor " contradicts itself.

Seems to me that the definition can't have it both ways.

Point taken Bob. Answer, there is no 100% correct response. People use the terms interchangeably.

While JB's response is clever I don't agree with the analogy . You can cut a tree down and chop it up but in the end it is wood /lumber/timber .
While the definitive answer is readily available in dictionaries and search engines (?) the two words engine and motor have become interchangeable simply through commom useage .
