I have vire 12 ( 10years old with about 200 hours total running ) installed in my river launch on the Thames, however, for the past two years during a short trip the engine back fired and stopped, it restarted and continued to run unill I returned home, the nextday when started it will do little more than tick over, operning the throtle causes the engine to stall, using the choke or partically covering the air intake and it will rev to full revs, on switching of the choke the engine continues to run for about 30seconds and stalls. to this
1. I have removed, fully dismantled and cleaned the carb and checked all the gallerys for blockages & check the float chamber level and all appears to be clear, and refitted with new manifold and float chamber gaskets.
2. As a matter of course I have also rebuilt the fuel pump with a new parts and once again all appears fine with a sufficient fuel delivery.
3. The cylinder has been checked and honed and the rings are unbroken.
4. The fuel has been replaced with fresh.
5. The spark plug, points and condenser replaced, and a fine spark obtained.
6. The exhaust checked for blockages and the silencer remove from the engine and cleaned.

One thing I have noticed is that no petrol issues from the main jet when the throtle is opened gradually to fully open, however, partically covering the air intake and petrol can been seen to flow.

Other than stripping the engine to check the crankcase oil seals I am at a loss what to do next, can you help? with any advice please. Thankyou

Hi, I sympathise with this! I have a Vire 7 in my Yot, Japhet, a Trident 24. This has a horrid Tillotson diaphragm carb and HAD a diaphragm (built into carb) petrol pump. I solved a lot of problems by eliminatimg this and fitting a Lucas / SU electric pump.

ISTR that the Vire 12 has a seperate diaphragm pump (actuated by the crank case pressure fluctuations. You could try replacing the diaphragms as they can eitherharden up, split or puncture. You could also chuck the wretched thing away and go the way I went, or install a gravity tank.

By the way, I think that in context, the Vire is a nice engine, being light and quiet, but ruined by it's horrid carb in the case of the 7, and the standard fuel pump.

Not a problem for you on fresh water, but the raw water (direct) cooling and dissimilar metals used all over the place have piqued my interest in further mods.

(Already, I've installed an alternator, but this project is part of further improvements)

Cheers,

Robin

Hajukas,

Have you tried contacting Fairways Engineering in the UK? They might be able to help with parts or literature, see:

Thanks Andrew, Fairwaysmarine seems to be the reference to go for essential info, although they are quite remote...THe Gofree links doesn't work anymore.

So back to basic, if someone knows how to find manuals for the Vire 12, it would be appreciated.

Ask the "Nick the Engineer" on eBay. He has a eBay shop and is the UK distributer for VIRE parts 6,7 and 12. He also does do call outs and he got mine working quite quickly. He can be found on www.VireEngines.com

Hi All,
If you want professional advice, not amateur rumours, you should contact the OFFICIAL dealer through the Vire website, both officialy endorsed by the manufacturers www.VireEngines.com
also, FYI as a matter of record, Fairways ceased to be an official dealer since about 2000, when it was in the hands of the late Dave Pickup did little except needlessly and incompetently rebuild engines without ever buying parts from the manufacturers;ceased submitting accounts to companies house since 2005, Mr.Pickup died Summer 07, and the landlords liquidated Fairways in April who had left chaos and huge unpaid bills. The phone has been dead since.

In fact, since 2006, Fairways have been requesting other engineers to rebuild Vires, who have referred any enquiries for Vires to Vire UK anyway, who have been the only official dealer since 2004, and that is because we have provided the rebuild website, support the manufacturer, give free technical advice worldwide, and basically the only long term supporter of Vires.
Masnedo, who bought the manufacturing licence and spares from Valmet when castings ceased decades ago, are really a huge marine chandler and general boatyard, they refer technical enquiries to Vire UK and VireEngines.com. Other sites are not reccomended because they list many wrong part numbers and unofficial repairers which have caused misery to many owners who have then given up.
Contrary to popular opinion, there are three areas in the Vire that unless rebuilt by an expert will lead to water in the gearbox/unreliable operation/seizure; these are the water pump shaft and seals/ carburettor / instalation of anti-siphon exhaust equipment. Simply replacing rubber seals and gaskets onto corroded components is not going to work or last.

Unlike alternatives which are often lower specification, All our parts are original and guaranteed to not only fit and last, but the cause of the failure and remedy will be tackled. Vire UK ONLY work on Vire engines, we are a specialist cottage industry, not a general marine engineers, although i do have a degree in Maritime Engineering, which seems to be a rarity nowadays, plus 20 years wide engineering to draw from. Vire engines should be repiared by an expert with spare engines and all new original service parts on the shelf, not some engineers who can hardly remeber the last petrol inboard they had, and may delegate it to a trainee.

there is ample spares online now through the main dealer

free technical helpline is 0(44)1202 470184
ebay shop has all the service spares plus rebuilt warranted engines usually.

please support the only remaining Vire specialist, it's down to Vire owners to choose to bodge engines and kill off expert advice and support, or do it properly and keep the brand and support alive for more years.

thanks for your support

Nick

Quite quiet engines, compared to my outboard or other peoples diesel engines, which is nice I can hear my NAV aids and depth sounder alarms and the radio more clearly. I believe it’s quite economical as well. It does of course have the advantage of being inside a compartment as well which makes it ever quieter again.

Does anyone have an idea what a Vires 7 would be worth for parts? I have one, the fly wheel turns by hand, shaft turns easily, but the engine has not been started for years

I will pay £100 for any Vire engine complete, I need the spares. I have several collected and its the basis of a used spares business, the only one in the world, as well as all new parts too. Prices arent cheap but they ARE available contact me via VireEngines.com, including lots of older parts now discontinued and not available new like Vire 6 exhausts, cylinders and gears. Most importantly, spares are of little use without guidance of the pitfalls and long term solution, so you not only fix your engine but remedy the origin for decades more or reliable operation. Dont bodge it, dont just replace it, fix it properly! worldwide shipping Fedex and paypal instant payment makes it easy

Hi Nick, I went to see your site and online shop. Good work. Do you intend to develop the vire 12 portion? Can you give me an idea on tuning up/ overhauling a vire 12?

The VireEngines.com site is an evolved cross between the original Vire6.info site (2002 which was a haynes style online manual) and now added Vire 7 site, but as you say, the Vire 12 is different. I havent yet decided if i should split the site into the 3 engines, because most of the parts are common but i think i can do it without replicating most information. look out around the Winter when i have a lot more time. There's also a commercial aspect to consider, and also the history, which i need to complete then.
In particular many jobs like tuning and fault-finding procedures have been given inadequate attention in the engine printed manuals, and i want to get a balance of giving this information at little cost where it will preserve an engine's life, and yet in many circumstances if you tell owners 'a little bit of information can be dangerous' is true, e.g. replacing pump seals is an expert job to make them last decades. I have considered splitting the site into seperate levels where general info is free, fault finding and spare part identification/inspection etc, and then if people want to have my expertise in detail online/they can donate via paypal to receive access to more info online. Trouble is, then, everything could get copied, and possibly republished, without control and so unfortunately, due to hackers, for the forseeable future i cant see myself putting all my knowledge and tips of sorting out over 100 Vire engine in the last 5 years online.

In answer to your question, the Vire 12 is the same as a Vire 7 except notably ; bing carb and pump, higher compression head, water trap built into quieter exhaust, different final drive ratio, different water pump housing, a few other things to do with the auxilliaries. The carb tuning is preset, you can only alter the throttle rest screw and the idle mixture screw(set slightly rich from its mid-point between the rich and lean misfire beginnings). There are no new Vire12 carbs now, but i can service them for you. It may be possible in future to have a new carb but i am still finalising the solution with suppliers(yet another new source of tested parts im opening up each month to keep the brand alive costing several hours a year each item). I have several engines in stock including rebuilt Vire12 and Vire6 plus all the Vire7 engines from every phase. Yesterday i was called out to 2 different boats, one dead; now running lovely after new Vire7 carb fitted, -the other also dead and pull starting only, ; now running perfect with refurbished carb, new points and refurbished dynastart/regularor/electrics added professionally in one 2 hour job! both owners had years of trouble and stress from previous bodging, now a thing of the past, very satisfying for me too!

Hi,
I recently bought a 2nd VIRE BVR inboard petrol engine. The Carb on the new engine is Solex. This appears unusual for the manuals I have read.
Any clues to finding out if this original part or where to locate info to tune them?

Thanks,
Kelly.

yes the Solex float/slide carburettors were on some very early BVR models circa 1960. later on all 6 and 7 used the tillotson membrane/throttle carb which is safer and better at starting, only those are now available new and i have spares. the earlier solex is pretty basic but not easy to use morse on unlike morse designed tillotson. The solex mixture constantly needed tuning for starting/running, and to prevent it leaking. personally i found them so much trouble misfiring, i would throw it away and fit a tillotson.

I have a Vire 12 from Nick ( the blue one in the photos in fact),.
I am very pleased with it. When servicing it, Nick has been very helpful and given his time and knowledge without charge. These are great engines and he's the man to get them from.
(I have no interest other than being a satisfied customer).

The key is only for alignment, it's the taper that should hold it in place. If the flywheel isn't fitting the crank properly it won't work. If everything is seated properly be sure the nut is torqued to specs. If not seated you can try lapping it in with valve grinding compound.
