When connecting the coil does it make any difference which poles on the coil are attached to the engine? Negative or poisitve to the igniter?

I guess you're using an automotive coil for a low tension coil. Polarity wouldn't make a difference. If you were using the engine full time it would be best to run it one way for a week and reverse it the next wee to keep eroding of the points even.
