Does anyone have one of these little fellers? Its missing a water pump. The flywheel is 9" od and is 1.25" wide. looks to be a copy of a Waterman engine but smaller. If anyone has one I would sure like to borrow the pump and make a copy.I assume the two lugs on the rear of the case is where the pump was located.

Dick,

The lugs on the bottom of the cylinder look like they could also be the pivot point for a rowboat motor, but the case looks all inboard???

A very good point Jim--but it remains how it would have been cooled. The wood support looks original and such could have been in a canoe. Bruce Hall has a complete one and will be sending pictures I hope.

Thanks for the ideas anyhow.

The carb was made by Watkins. I should have posted more pictures.

It looks like the cooling water inlet is opposite the spigot for the primer.
The output shaft looks short for an eccentric plus a length to attach to a hub for the drive shaft.
Could it be, this is a water pump engine which gets its cooling from the main large pump?

I think its only 1 hp. not much of a water pump with 1 hp. I was wondering it it had a Arkansas water pump ie aka per JB the boat moving thru the water forces water up thru the engine

Bruce Hall sent pictures of his Watkins but its a 3 hp with a much bigger flywheel with spokes. Its pump appears to bolt to the cylinder casting. Not sure if the pump discharge is by hose or directly into the base.

Dick

From the pictures, it still looks like an outboard cylinder grafted on to a inboard base. The rear cylinder bolts come up thru the bottom and the front from the top. Every engine in my shop the cylinder mounting bolts go in the same direction. The extra holes in all four corners of the cylinder base, and overlap on the crankcase, indicate the cylinder came off a different motor. An outboard cylinder wouldn't have provisions for a water pump, and the lugs on the back are bigger than needed to mount a pump, indicating it is a pivot point for and outboard. With all that said, a picture is worth a thousand words, but actually being there is worth a thousand pictures.

Dick,

After you mentioned the Sweet outboards, I looked them up on Jack Craibs sight and I think I found one that matches your cylinder.

I am reluctant to challenge the wisdom of thoes who have posted before me. Like all ignorant people I have an opinion that goes against the tide. I do not think is was ever an outboard motor. Not only is the crank case an issue but the flywheel is to big for an outboard motor.

Not to confuse the issue any further I took a water pump and coupling/strap assembly off of a Dispro E1 engine and held it up as shown in the pictures. A simple block with a lug to fit between the cylinder lugs held in place with a pin would work. the crank shaft fit the coupling like a glove.

David,

Just the cylinder was part of an outboard, the crank, case and flywheel are part of a unknown at the time inboard motor.

Jim
