Your greatest leverage to turn the engine will be on the flywheel ring gear.Using a bar to pry the engine over tooth by tooth gives tremendous power because of the mechanical reduction involved.I hope you're planning a teardown at least for cleanup.good luck.

I HAVE A PERKINS MARINE 6354 THAT IS COMPLETELY SEIZED. THE CRANK WILL NOT BUDGE. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING FINE WHEN IT WAS SHUT DOWN BUT A RESTART ATTEMPT WEEKS LATER FOUND THE ENGINE SEIZED. I HAVE TRIED A LARGE SOCKET ETC, BUT NO BUDGE. COULD A TRANSMISSION FAILURE COMPLETELY PREVENT THE CRANK FROM TURNING OR ANY IDEAS?

You need to pull the cylinder head and assess the damage. was it low on oil?, signs of water where it doesnt belong? I doubt a transmission lock up would completely seize an engine there would be some small movement. There os always some gear lash.

ROGER,

THANKS MUCH FOR THE RESPONSE. ONE OTHER ITEM: THE OIL LEVEL IS TWICE THE HEIGHT PAST THE FULL MARK. THE LEVEL WAS NORMAL ON THE LAST ONE HOUR CRUISE. THE OIL HAS NOT CHANGED COLOR OR FROTHED. DRAINED SOME SFORM THE SUMP (ONE QUART) BUT DID NOT GET ANY WATER. COULD THW CYLINDERS FILLED WITH WATER SOMEHOW AND WOULD THAT PREVENT ANY CRANK MOVEMENT? THANKS AGAIN FOR THE HELP.

It would not seize is solid, the engine would be turnable back wards. Have you tried that. Hydro lock will stop and engine from turning over, but generally some air get trapped also allowing for some movement. Im afraid I missed the part as to what type of engine this is. If diesel try to remove the injector to bleed off any fluid in the cylinder, If gas remove the spark plugs. My guess is this is a diesel though. If a socket won't move it in either dirrection, You need to plan a tear down. Even if you break it loose it will most likely self distruct if you run it without checking it out. Engines don't seize without doing damage to some degree.

With the oil leval high it could be diesel dilution. Maybe a cylinder filled with diesel or a cylinder scored from poor oil. You should be able to turn barkwards though. I just went through a sticky engine here myself it would turn backwards but not forwards. The trans had a sprag clutch (lets engine freewheel one way) and the rest of the trans was stuck. I added 8 gallons of diesel to the trans and it unstuck quickly.

Don, Don't underestimate the ability of a jammed starter drive to lock the engine fast and prevent rotation in either direction. This always occurs on the starters being energized to startup.Judging from your sequence of events and oil condition, at this point I would remove the starter and try to bar the engine over using a chisel-ended like bar on the individual teeth with the flywheel housing as a fulcrum. The mechanical advantage far surpasses the use of wrench on the crankshaft nut.Good luck and please let us know the outcome.

I have a Perkins 6-354 marine engine with the wrong dipstick (the marks are in the wrong place for my engine). The possible oil capacity is listed in the manual as between 20 and 52 pints depending on the sump casting type, so I do not know where to put new dipstick marks on my stick.
I assume the oil level limits in all such engines are the same, relative to the crankshaft, with the sump capacity being the only variable.
Can anyone give me measurements from the bottom of the engine casting to the "full" and "empty" marks on their dipstick?
And am I on the right track?

No you might not be correct. I have 3 354's and all have differant dipsticks and oil pans. i'll look and see if 2 are the same.

Well the 2 i checked both have the full mark 1.5 inches below the bottem of the block. The add mark is .5 inches lower. The 3rd engine is setting too far away. One engine is a 1966 the other is 1976.

Most likely you will have to take apart the sized engine and find the problem. It could be several things, water in the cylinders from a bad head gasket,or broken sleeve or piston or both.

Has anyone used a adapter barring tool on a Perkins 6354 to unseize their motor? If so where can someone find one? Thanks
