I just acquired a 18' inboard 1927 Dunphy "Sand Dab". Boat has 18" wide engine stringers. Most post war motors are 22 1/2".
Any ideas as to 4 cylindermotors in the 20-75 HP to look for? range |

Contact Lance Wilson in Guntersville Al. He lists a 1927 Dunphy 17 ft inboard runabout in the 2015 ACBS directory. He's running a 6 cyl Universal 75 HP.

That is the boat that I am going to buy. The Universal is not installed and at 22 1/2" between motor mounts it will not fit the narrow stringers. It is just part of the deal. That is why I am looking for suggestions for a moderate powered engine with narrow motor mounts. |

I had known that many pre-war engines used a small stringer center-line distance but always assumed that there would be a standard. Guess I was wrong!
Some of my engine mountings:
1906 4 cyl Sterling 13"
1905 Dieter Steam engine 13"
1911 Sterling R1-135 Six cylinder race engine 14.5"
Early to mid teen Wisconsin AM-4 16.5"
1910 Mullins 2 stroke 3 HP (Waterman) 10"
Was news to me!

Stringer spacing is very much on my mind at this point. I have the luxury(?) of putting new engine bearers and stringers in Valinda, the Geo. Lawley launch being readied to receive my 2 cyl. 6hp Roberts two cycle. (Incidentally, Lew's "Mullins" is a Roberts engine sold in quantity to the Mullins company for powering their early galvanized metal boats.
My two cylinder Roberts has the same 10" bolt pattern crosswise. I have ended up with a two step approach to stringer spacing and engine mounting. The gap between the stringers is 18" and I have used 1/4 x 3 x 3 angle iron to
extend inward toward the center of the boat.
The ultimate length of these steel engine bearers will be decided when and if I can
find a reverse gear to use for this installation.
