I have a 23 foot lifeboat with a 1909 Straubel 6 hp that I have running well, thanks to the help from this group.

I use this boat 3 or 4 times/week in the Summer and the engine runs great. Once-in-awhile the plug will foul and I need to clean it. Actually bought a new plug today after 8 years of operation.

This boat is now in my name and I would like to get insurance. Can someone please give me a rough estimate of the value for insurance purposes. The boat is not a yacht but is in very nice condition, leaks a little but is a real hit wherever I go with it. Engine starts first or second pull of the flywheel.

PS.

What gap should the plug be set at? I have a Champion 25. Is there a better plug?

The seats in the picture have been replaced with varnished White Oak. Looks much better now.

try Hagerty's Marine Insurance. They insure in the same form as life insurance, its based on a per thousand rate. You pick the amount you think the boat is worth. You should base it on the time and effort and money you put into the boat, not some market price as the boat is so rare there is no real market comparable.

I don't know whether there is a better plug than a Champion 25. That is there only pipe thread plug I know of and I believe is being used to replace the old Ch X.

Russ,

Do you have larger photos of your boat and engine we could see? Maybe post them on the boat and engine section?

Thanks..
