Hi Guys, I have been given a Johnson Seahorse 2R72M 50th Aniversary Series petrol outboard and am having trouble getting it to start, the engine was empty of fuel when it was given to me, I'm getting a spark and there seems to be compression. The cord turns the engine and prop but I could go on until my arm falls off. I'm not sure of a start point can anyone give me some tips on how to get it started, the engine is in very good condition and hardly seems to have been used. Great site by the way.

Im sure you mean full of fuel. Change the plugs, look at them when you take them out, are the wet with fuel?? Flooded. Or are they dry, no fuel??
More steps later

Hi Rog, sorry I meant empty when I was given the engine, I'll alter that in a moment. That was a quick post.
THe engine has a single plug which was in good condition and very dry until the engine was turned over a good dozen times; the plug is now damp with fuel.
cheers

Just a point that some of you may find amusing, I now know what the single large screw on the top centre of the housing is for...imagine the chaos just as I took the housing off at the point of no return.
