Would love to hear any home jobs!, especially with pics :-)
I have always been interested in this, have theorised a lot into paternmaking and would like to start off with making a replacement cylinder for an existing Simplex 3Hp [having a foundry do the pour, then a machine shop work to my specs] Ultimately to make a complete large 2-stroke gasoline, reversible single [excluding piston & rod]

Greg, to send a job like this to a machine shop would be very expensive. A local guy bought a water pump casting for $40, sent it to a machinist, 20 hours at $30 an hour, $600. You could probably get 50 of them done for $100 each, but one off machining is expensive by the time you make the jigs to hold things.

Hi Greg,

I have a boat / motor combination that was built by Ron Wheeler in Iluka. The motor is a "new" 4.5hp single cylinder 2-stroke called a Donk. It was featured in Amateur Boatbuilder a couple of times in 2003 (I think that's the year). The boat is 16 foot and has nice efficient (if slightly wet) line. The motor is very strong - fully swept crank for good compression and electronic timing - kind of groovy. It drives an 11 inch prop with, I think, a 15 inch pitch. She needs to loss a couple of inched of pitch to comfortably see full revs - but in current mode is good for at least 6 knots.

I believe he sold the business of motor manufacture but I haven't been able to find out who, if anyone, actually took over the business.

If anyone out there knows more than me (and reading this forum, that's everybody) please let me know.

If you like I'll try to post some images.

Hey, thanks for your reply :-)
Yes, i first heard of 'the Donk' thru 'Amateur Boatbuilder' australia . I sent for the brochure and have it! wow hey! I did ring Ron a few years ago but he was not happy to talk to a like minded engine building enthusiast!
I never knew he did a boat to go with that!
"fully swept crank" ? is this that the crankcase is largely filled [dislpaced] with the crank?
I built a boat in 1986 with a 3 1/2Hp Blaxland, still have it {attached /if it worked?}. [has an 11"x 11" prop].
So do own this boat you describe?
Thanks for the reply
