Stearns produced several engine "series" with letter designations (A, AR, AU; D, DR, DU etc).
I have an ad for their "A" tractor engine stating the "A" version was open flywheel, no bell/flywheel housing, and the AU version was with a bell/flywheel housing for tractors of unit construction.
Stearns marine engines wer apparently quite popular until production ceased in 1929 or 30.
Does anyone here know, or care to hazard a guess, as to what the difference(s) were in the "AR" version??

Reviewing some Stearns marine engine ads I find "R" version engines described as "high speed" versions, wound up tighter and giving more HP. The ads didn't mention whether they were more precisely built/finished or if different materials used in them for the higher stresses.
Stearns traditionally underrated their engines so they always delivered more power than advertised (they were the "Extra Reserve" motors). |
