Puritan Machine Co advertised a Perkins 4cyl 4 cycle marine engine, desc as 21/4x4, in a 1916 issue of Power Boating...
Puritan was apparently not an engine builder but a purchaser of the parts inventory of failed car and car parts co's, advertising itself as a dealer in orphan car p[arts...
I believe Puritan purchased leftover or surplus Perkins 4s built by Massnick-Phipps Mfg Co (known mostly for their Perkins V8). Google says the Perkins 4s were used in marine and power unit uses as well as in various cars. At least some of the 4s had "Perkins" cast in script on the crankcase and a brass tag referring to the Massnick-Phipps Mfg Co riveted to the crankcase.
To save wading through innumerable Perkins hits, does any of the above sound familiar to anyone??
Many thxx for any comments!!

Richard: As always, a most helpful mine of information! Many thxx!
Someone in Oz (AU) turned up a teens-era Perkins 4 cyl and was having trouble ID'g it, sorting thru various UK etc Perkins's.
I'll refer him to your pix etc; maybe a US Perkins is what he has.
Again, many thxx!
