I am researching the history of an elegant 49' saloon launch called Laughing Water II, built in 1912 for Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and based on the River Thames at Cliveden House, Maidenhead, west of London in Great Britain. It was restored between 1976 and 1987 by my dad, and I inherited her in 2006. She had a Gray Marine engine, Model 6-51, engine no. 14002, which he also resored to working order. It proved too powerful for use on shallow UK canals and rivers, and was later replaced by a smaller diesel engine. The 6-51 is now at the UK National Waterways Museum (at Ellesmere Port) where it has been on display. Can anyone provide any information or archive sources about this engine, which I gather was manufactured in 1935. It would be of particular interest to know who it was sold to when new, potentially the Astors? Thanks for any help. Andy

Hi Andy,
I checked in my Lloyds register and found three Laughing Waters, but none which fitted the boat you mentioned.
There are a number of people who Im sure will be able to help, but Steve Mills here in the UK is very knowledgeable having restored a Gray six cylinder engine and other marine and vintage engines.
Suggest you send Steve the description you gave on the Old Marine Engine site
Regards
