I picked up a side draft brass/bronze Tillotson carburetor Model MS, No. 1A. The opening at the throttle body is 1 3/16" dia. Was this carburetor used in marine applications?

Searcher,
The MS 1A was used on the 1933 Utilimotor.

Jack,

Thanks for responding. I hoped the Tillotson was off a marine engine of some type since it was mostly brass/bronze but I am pleased to know the application regardless.

Thanks again. Hugh

Jack,

I looked up the Utilimotor on the old gas engine site. This carburetor did not seem to be a 'fit' for the Utilimotor in size or configuration. So, I took another look at the model number, this time with a strong light and a hand lens. The carburetor is actually a MS 4A. Only a part of the 4 is clear and it looks like a 1 until subjected to careful scrutiny.

During the research I came across the Tillotson original equipment list. This carburetor apparently came off an Evinrude Motors Corp. R Sportwin, 1927-1928. That makes sense to me as this has the venturi shape similar to the old Schebler and the size is consistent with a bigger engine.

So, I think that mystery is solved. I might not have persued this any further had you not responded to my original inquiry. Thanks.

Hugh

I have an old Elgin 12 hp two stroke twin cyl outboard motor with a Tillotson MD89C carb. Can anyone help me with the needle valve adjustments? I just bought this engine not running but it just had a bad coil and someone has misadjusted the needles.
Thanks for any info that you can pass along. Kevin
