Picked up this Acadia last week from a friend that inherited a farm with this in it a couple or years ago..It was thought by him to be a pump.lol and was in the scrap metal pile when I saw it. I gave him $100 and he delivered it to my place.I have searched the internet and found this board and glad I did because you all have the experience with these unusual motors. I have see hit and miss motors at county fairs all over but have never see a marine motor. Always was interested in them but never new anyone with one.Well I got my own now! my friends think I have lost it with my new acquisition..."What are you going to do with it" they ask .Get it to run first and I will go from there.
Here is the monster . I have been cleaning it up and checking to make sure every thing is still moving and tight.I think the previous owner was going to use it to pump water with it maybe. That handle on the flywheel should probably come off before I start it..Looks like it could catch someone unexpected.Gaskets look good everywhere I have looked.Wanted to clean the crankcase out with something to get all the 1/4"thick grease type sludge out.Any ideas on how to flush it cleaner?
And is that valve with the cup for priming the motor? The correct handle should be spring loaded and retract into the flywheel. It's a lot easier to start it with the handle, advance the timing and pull the handle up against compression when the ignitor snaps the engine will start in the opposite direction. Keith Kinney brought his boat down to my camp, an Acadia in a trap skiff. He bought the boat recently, the timing was to far advanced, re timed it and cleaned the ignitor, he rode all day, great running motor, starts and reverses easily.

I took the handle off...I got it to fire up....need to to preset The Schebler to take over after I prime it....It just burns the priming fuel. Is there any preset turns on the mixture screws? Oh Yea the motor tends to run across the floor.Anyway ideas on how to hold it in place on a concrete floor?

One turn out on the mixture screw should be in the running range. Open the throttle some. The air balance valve on the air horn won't affect it at low speeds. Screw two 2X4's across the bottom of the stand, 18" out on each side. Stand on these while it's running, should hold it in place. Adjust your timing so the ignitor snaps as close to TDC as you can get it when the lever is in retard position. If you advance the timing it should start in the opposite direction, retard and it will carry through in the same direction. With the timing advanced you can kill the ignition and let it coast to it's last rev, connect ignition and the engine will reverse.

I ended up bolting the motor to the floor...It was chasing me around in circles in my garage...I am sure the neighbors had a good laugh..That is a great looking clean rig Keith's got there..The 5 Hp looks a lot like my 4 Hp motor.I got to replace the float because it is flooding the motor after it starts to sink..Tried to fix but shellac and superglue didn't last long..Trying to get one from OTTO http://www.ringspacers.com/index.htm

The really interesting thing about Keith's boat is most noticeable when he's got the engine running really slow.

You can feel the boat speed up and slow down with each stroke of the motor. Not at all unpleasant.

I figured that because the hull is so efficient, the initial part of the stroke has the power to accelerate the boat, and then as the piston comes up on the second stoke, the boat decelerates a bit - enough that you can sense it.
At high engine speed, the effect is not felt.

I can describe it as a gentle chugging motion. The Acadia is running about ( my guess) 200 rpm.

All of this PLUS really great friends and terrific Cajun food - especially from the "Wicked Wizard" of the South - deep fried boudin balls-yum!

The sludge that you described in the crankcase is a combination of old grease and old oil from the fuel/oil mix.

There is nothing really bad about leaving it in there unless you are a neat freak.

And even if you do clean it out, you'd find that after 10 - 15 hours of running that the black stuff would be there again.

On the plus side, the black stuff actually reduces the volume of the crankcase and gives you a higher pressure to move the fresh charge of fuel to the cylinder when the inlet port opens.

Your choice - but I'd come down on the side of
"if it ain't broken, don't start fixing it"

Thanks miro for your help with this motor...it has helped a lot...I got my motor to run and as it popped away on the floor I could only imagine it in a skiff like Keith has putt putting down the lake someday I hope..for now it does it in my garage to a funky beat.Still tinkering with it till I get some consistence in how it runs.
