My name is Barry White and I am restoring a delightful little canoe stern keeler, approx 6 m in length. The original inboard two stroke had been disposed of by the previous owner ( a Vire engine, I believe),and an outboard was used. This doesnt look very pretty on the boat, so I have acquired a ST66 dating from about 1969. It only seems to lack a dynastart unit and a crank handle, but we are hoping to get it running in the near future. I am keen to find out if there are any ST owners in the Bay of Plenty Region here in New Zealand, or in fact anywhere in NZ, who I could contact. Many thanks, Baz

Hi Barry,
I am in Marlborough and also have a P66D that I reconditioned and fitted in a 16' clinker. It runs well and they are delightful old engines once you tune them up properly. There are quite a few of these lurking around once you start noticing them. I have another P66 but I am restoring another 14' clinker for it. The Dynastart is a bit of a hassle if you haven't got one but to be quite honest, it isn't really necessary as my one won't recharge the battery and I start manually all the time, I just use a squirt of 'Start ya Bastard' and it does every time, one or two cranks. If you have any queries then feel free to get in touch. Cheers, Roy

Thanks for replying Roy. Yes, I did wonder if I needed the dynastart, but I think it could be tricky ducking below in the yacht in a hurry to crank the motor into life. Would be a luxury to just lean into the cabin and press a button! I am trying to remember all the lessons regarding two strokes I learnt as a teenageer growing up in London in the 1960's. I has a couple of Vespa's and several Moto Rumi motor scooters, and I didnt need a gym with alll the running and bump starting required. Built strong legs though. This particular P66 came with two belts, obviously one for the flywheel and another for a pulley bolted to the front of the flywheel. There was something bolted on the engine on the opposite side to the dynastart, could it have been a generator or alternator perhaps. I have had a crank handle made up by a friend and we have a spark but so far no go.(This is the magneto version P66) Now thoroughly cleaning carby etc and hoping to have it running soon.I wondered if there was somewhere I could procure a manual, need to know about timing etc. Thanks again, BAz

Hi Barry,
There are 3 timing marks on the P66. There is the TDC, a Mag 1 and a Mag 2. These are on the front face of the flywheel. You set the maggy with the points just opening as you come up to mag 1 for the front cylinder. The Mag 2 is 180 degrees opposite for number 2 cylinder. Use a Multi meter on the ohms scale across the points and when the points break the meter will show an open reading. Just an aside.. The maggy will fit in 2 positions 180 deg apart so you have to make sure that you are on the right plug lead to fire. Fine adjustments can be made by loosening the nut on the drive cone and give it a small rap with a hammer and you can turn the drive coupling for fine adjustment but it should be OK if it has not been played with..
I run an Alternator on my P55 and it will start with a simple flick of the handle. DO NOT keep winding the handle. All it needs is a sharp pull against compression. They like plenty of fuel to start when cold.

Hope this is of help.
Regards,

Dave

Thanks for the info Dave. We have been able to get the engine running, albeit briefly, so now will try and get it ready to install in the boat. Do you know where I could find a manual for the P66 to download or whatever. It appears that this engine started out with a magneto but was possibly converted to coil ignition, so my mechanic friend says, as the mag doesnt seem to function.I understand that the later P66 engines had twin coil ignition, whereas we have this engine running on one. Its all greek to me so any info would be great. Many thanks Baz
