Does anyone know this gear box on my sole diesel 1 cyl engine? The engine is lombardini LD450, but I cannot find out the make of the gearbox. It is a inline gearbox with clutch and brake band, with a separate reduction gear.

Any info much appreciated

These type of gear boxes are fairly simple in design. Yours has a built in gear reduction as well - probably a 1 to 1.5 or 1 to 2 reduction so that the propeller speed is less than the engine speed.
This makes for a more efficient propeller.

The crankcase and gearbox share the oil sump.
The gear box is designed to take the trust of the propeller.

Based on the pictures, the gearbox looks "big" for a 1 cylinder engine, - that means that very likely the same gearbox is used for much larger engines.

When you engage the gearbox, it is important to engage it fully, not half way . When you take the top cover off, you'll see a set of multiple pressure plates, and a taper sliding cone that engages fingers ( probably 3 of them) that bear down on the pressure plates for the forward direction. For reverse, there is likely a band that compresses against an outer ring of a planetary gear set that makes the output shaft go in the reverse direction.
In the forward direction the planetary gears do not run against each other - the whole assembly rotates - in effect giving you more flywheel weight.

The whole thing looks to be in OK shape because there is little or no oil seeping out from the crankcase or gearbox.
