Can anyone comment on if the wire from the battery to the coil is positive or negative. Also where is the opposite wire grounded? Is there a specific place on the engine and if so where?

Roger, Put "wiring diagram" in the search function on the main page. Scroll down to discussion #7. You will find wiring diagrams there.

Thanks Bruce. It looks like the info Is for high tension (buzz coil) type systems rather than the low tension type I have.
One wire connects to the clip on the ignitor, I was wondering if you (or anybody else) could advise as to where the ground wire was connected. I would assume that the ground was connected to the move able part of the ignitor at the nuts that hold the push rod.

Any comments from anybody?

The wire from the battery to the coil is the positive. The wire from the coil then goes to the ignitor. The negative wire from the battery is generally grounded at the base of the engine where it is attached to the bedding. You can place a switch in line on the positive wire as well is you wish.

The pics from the Acadia manual I have show the center terminal of the battery to the coil and then to the ignitor. The switch is in the lead to the side of the battery which goes to the engine block.

I am pretty sure the center terminal was positive on the old dry cell batteries.

In fact reverse the polarity once in a while to even out the ignitor point wear.

Hope this helps
Ernie

From an old Acadia Manual The Atlantic manual shows the same picture.
NOTE NO FUSE
I have seen these ignition systems pull almost 10 amps when the ignitor points have stuck closed. The old timers didn't want or need more connections to complicate things.
