Hi all. Can anyone tell me the correct method to set the timing on a Buchanan Junior 4. I would also like to know the recommended points and spark plug gap. Hope someone can help

The gap for the points is .008 - 010 in and the gap for the plugs is in the range of .025-.030 in.

To set the timing here's what I do if I don't have any info.
Disconnect the battery and take off the distributor cap.
Get cylinder 1 on TDC on the power stroke.
Connect an ohmmeter across the points and move the setting on the distributor so that it just opens the points.
Then retard the distributor setting by maybe 5-degrees.
Remove the ohmmeter.
Replace the cap and reconnect the battery.
You should be able to start he engine and then adjust the distributor setting so that it idles better.
The internal spark advance on the distributor should take care of the timing advance as the speed of the engine increases.

If you don't have an ohmmeter, you can use a small battery and a light bulb .

But please make sure you have good clean points.

And please remember that about 80% of carburetor problems on old marine engines are electrical.
