Being something of an geek when it comes to restoring old iron, I like to know whatever I have done is historically accurate to the extent possible. This article provides some answers as to ball Vs roller thrust bearings. The bottom line is both appear suitable for the purpose in small engines. The dominant use of ball thrust bearings probably indicates the ball bearing was both less expensive than the roller bearing and just as suitable for the purpose given the relatively light use.
