Hi guys,

I am looking for some advice, I have blown my 454 mercruiser, I had an oil alarm failure and ran out of oil, I was told I spun a rod (hole in the oil pan) and cracked the block, I have since bought a remanufactured engine and was wondering what advise you could give in regards to replacing or reusing the oil cooler and components? TIA

An oil cooler does exactly what it says it does so
as long as you cleaned it out and made sure the fittings are oil tight and water tight, you should be able to refit them on the engine. If you want to test the thing, you can use a bubble test - air pressure on the oil side at 40 - 50 psi will show leaks if any.
But it is a messy job so get prepared for a lot of gunk.

Do NOT use the oil cooler from the blown engine. It most likely has metal particles in it from the blown engine that basically can't be removed and they WILL damage the new engine
Hope this helps
