Robert,
I spoke with Bob Mayeux about your post. He said he has literature on Corliss gas engines but does not have a computer. You can call him at 318-442-0611. He lives in Pineville, Louisiana.
Hope this helps.
Nick

... thanks for that. I was asking because I just acquired a copy of a Corliss catalogue circa 1914. Quite a high quality engine obviously. Almost makes me want to go after the hulk!

The full catalogue is here: http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2011-2/1364429/

Download it if you want it, I won't keep it up there indefinitely.

Douglas, excellent! Anything you'd like to put into the "public domain"? ;-)

Last I heard (several years ago), the Suisun Corliss remained submerged.

Robert, has anyone done anything about the San Mateo ferry that is up the Fraser River. Last photo I saw was a newspaper one showing it submerged. I use to drive by it on my was to school in Seattle in the early 60s. I believe it is still steam. Do you ever come to Vancouver? I would like to have coffee with you.

Daniel,
A gentleman in Gilroy, Calif. has the Corliss engine from the Susuin. The water jackets are badly broken because an earlier owner let it dry out, but I hear it's otherwise intact. If you send an email to me, I can give you his contact information.

In the early 1980's I was fortunate to take a number of rides on the Susuin out of Bethel Island. Ben Mozetti renamed her back to Susuin after he bought her from Mr. Case's estate. The Corliss engine is 6-cyl, 10-1/2 x 12, T-head, dual ignition (converted from igniters), Model A carburetor on each cylinder, turned a 54" prop, and I think weighed 12-14 tons. The boat was built in 1914, 86' LOA x 14' beam with plumb stem, fantail stern, and was as classic and handsome as you could get. I don't think the engine ever ran much over 250 rpm and the sound it made with the 6" straight stack can't be quite described. It sounded good, too, running under 100 rpm in the no-wake zone.

She never sunk for any amount of time, but did have a tragic fire after having a lot of work done. I've heard rumors the stripped hull is under restoration somewhere in the delta. She will never be quite the same without the original machinery.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the information I was a friend of Tom Case and grew up
spending summers on the Virginia-S. I would like to get the contact
information of the gentleman in Gilroy. My address is [email protected] Thanks again for your help

Best Regards, Dan

In answer to 350_astro here is a picture of the sad end to the San Mateo ferry. It, like most of the other boats at this location, sank and became an issue with By-Law folks as well as environmental. Then began the break up but that is now joined the wait. It is leaning against an old BC Ferry that is also under scrutiny by the powers that be. The owners have a lot of stuff, "good stuff", that is just rotting away.San Mateo

As seen on "Canadian Pickers" right, Joe?

The ferry is toast, but hopefully someone will salvage some of the wood from it, as well as the engine and fittings obviously.

350_Astro: be glad to thanks, but I rarely get over these days. Let me know if you're coming to the Island though.

I still have the catalogue scans if anyone needs them.
