I have a Gray Marine 238HP Fireball V-8 boat engine. I do not know if it runs, but it rotates and is very clean inside. Looking at the numbers I believe this is a 1962 engine based on the Rambler 327 V8. It has the dual Carter YF sidedraft carbs and a Mallory distributor.

The cradle numbers do not seem to match (they show a lower HP coding). Any idea how to find out more information on this engine?

According to the chart at http://www.finewoodboats.com/Gray.htm
it is a 1962. Problem is did the tag get replaced or the carbs and valve covers? The cylinder head casting number comes back as a 287. Till you run the block number it's a mystery.

Huh. I never thought that the valve covers and carbs could have been swapped over, good point. Where exactly will I find the block number? I'll take some more photos as you guys recommend in order to properly identify this item.

I saved it from the boneyard crusher by buying it for scrap value (it was sitting in the bed of an old pickup truck). It just looked like something that needed to be saved and used, not crushed into junk. I hope to have it find a home with a someone who really wants to use it.

Chris,
I don't know where the block numbers are but they will look like the 3152930 number on the head.

OK, I found the block casting number, it is located under the valley cover, and is 315 3077. This identifies it as a 250CI engine. The carb tag reads "26185" "L7" and has a small arrow punch out. Sounds like a mongrel engine.

I did not get any serious offers on buying this engine whole, so I am parting it out. Search Gray Marine on eBay. All items will have a low starting bid and reasonable buy it now pricing.
