Scott, I tried to reply to your email, it bounced. I would guess about 1910, you can see a spot for the oiler on the manifold. The bolt on exhaust, single bolt gear cover and wide intake were all early design. I have some castings for the timer, do you need it machined?

Jamie Hury and Audie Taquino each have an engine like this, no tag on theirs. L-A usually stamped the ser # on the end of the crank, I'll check with them to see if they're marked. I didn't know they were a type O.

I'm wondering if on closer inspection that the type O on the tag above is really a type C ? early lockwood Ash engs up through 1911 were alphabetically typed.

Type A was single cyl.

Type B was enbloc twin with lever timer.

Type C was enbloc twin with rotary timer.

Later engs were typed by their Horse Power rating.

1909

LA09

Her is a rare photo ad and the earliest I have found so far and a bit different than the later styled eng above.

1907

Here's a 1912 drawing of a 6hp, same style, I think the 5hp was earlier.

Richard, that second ad appears to be a 3 port, intake and ex on the same side, no check valves. That's the only 3 port L-A I've ever seen.

J.B.

When I first saw this ad it struck me as an engine that must have a lot of history around it ! So far I have not seen a photo of an earlier L/A twin this may be their first ?? also seems technologicaly in reverse to give up three port design for two port ? My thoughts are that maybe they had casting difficulties or costs and there was the patent rights to be financialy dealt with ??

Would sure like to see one in one of the Bateaus
and run side by side with a two port of same HP.

Best part of all this ---- is every time we hear about an old LA twin, sugar plums of a 3 port will dance in our heads--- GREAT STUFF--.

When someone wants to know about a two cylinder L-A and they don't know if it's a 6 or 8hp I tell them to count the bolts holding the cylinder to the base, a 6 has 6 bolts an 8 has 8. I was looking at the drawing, the 6 has 8 bolts like an 8hp, but Scotts motor has 6.

I bought these Motorgo exhaust and intake manifolds as a package thinking the were originally from the same two cylinder, 8 hp, engine. I can see from this thread that the intake manifold probably dates about the same as Scott's engine but the exhaust manifold must be much later. Any guesses as to the date of the exhaust manifold?

If the exhaust is from a L-A it is probably earlier. There was a man and his son with pictures of their 8hp L-A at Mystic, had individual cylinders. It's the only one I've ever seen. All of the enbloc 8's I'm familiar with had the integral manifold. My 12hp is indiviual cylinders, a similar manifold. Caille produced motors for Sears, they had an 8hp twin with a round manifold, seems they looked like this.

The manifold still has a little of the original battleship gray enamel on it. Maybe the two did go together after all.

Richard and JB, thanks for responding.

Richard, these are terrific illustrations. I am still having a problem with resizing photos but at least my last post produced photos that were big enough to see (photos in my posts of a month or two ago were too small to be useful). How many pixels in these images?

Richard, do you have any pictures of an 8hp Caille twin? Those manifolds don't look like L-A, the ex doesn't have a ring on the back and the intake is made a little different. Thanks for posting the brochure, it will come in handy. I didn't realize that style 8hp was still being made in 1914, suprised I've only seen one.

Searcher

How many Pixels in the above Posts ??

Several years ago when attempting photo emailing, printing and posting and worrying about pixels the process was very frustrating, I discovered a photo system by the name of( ACDSee )it was about $39.00 and maybe now the older versions can be dowloaded free? I have available at the click of the mouse the means to change the size In ( KB ) of a photo from a digital camera, scanner or recieved as an email, the limit on this site is 100 KB, the posts above average 80 KB. At the same time the option of a RESOLUTION from 150 up to 2400, the posts above are 150. The pixel count changes with the size and amount of color or text of photos but the ACDSee does it for me !The higher the resolution the more that the picture can be blown up to see details without distortion but it makes the image larger in KB -- an easy balance once You get used to the system . Hope this doesn't confuse the issue even more and I'm certain it won't pass muster with the Techies but its been working for me !!!

Thanks. I am also using ACDSee. I never had any problem posting large, clear images on this site until a short time ago. One of us in the office must have hit a key wrong and changed some obscure global setting that I cannot find. I just purchased Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and will make the transition to the more powerful (and longer learning curve) software. I am astounded with what Photoshop can do. For instance, sometimes you have no choice but to take a photo of an engine where there is a really busy background that makes the subject ahrd to see. With Photoshop, you can totally remove the background and replace it with a background of your choosing. Sorry, I digress from the Lockwood Ash/MotorGo discussion, you know what getting a new toy is like.
