I recently picked up this engine because I thought it looked very cool. At first I thought it could have been home made, but after looking closer, I am not so sure. It doesn't have any manufacturer identification on it that I have found. Can you please help me figure out what this thing is?

Thanks

Then please, another old 2 stroke. This bought some time ago in an antique market.
Never been in a boat plus has spare head, cylinder and piston.
Assume US built. About 4.6" piston.
Any ideas on the make? There are no markings. WICO igniter. Schebler carby.

Unknown two stroke

Everything on the red motor but the removable head looks like a Caille, the check valve, three bolt water pump, three hole flywheel, and what I can see of the exhaust manifold.

The 2 cylinder looks like the B.F.Brown "Brownie" Canoe motor.

Here are a couple of Caille pics for comparison. I wonder if it is an AU copy like some other engines. Fuller and Johnson pump engines for one.
This Caille belongs to Scott N from the Mystic Seaport.
Scott does great work. I saw this one about an hour after he dug it out of the ground. It really was a rusty lump.

Johnoxley, on your red single you mentioned that it had a spare piston, does the piston have slots
in it to let the crankcase gas through it to the cylinder ?

J.B.

Your first post hit it right on the head- its a Caille except the removable head !
Took some time and researched every piece of Caille info that I have-- cannot find one with removable head ?
Looking at the 4 bolt head and its design it most closely resembles an ERD engine ?
I think Ernie also right on with the idea that it is Some sort of Copy and liked the removable head or didn't have the ability to cast it headless, pretty cool engine !

I didn't realize it was a "down under" engine when I first saw it, had never seen a removable head on a Caille.

Thanks for help. Images of piston and PS motor. Note better view igniter drive. Only brands are WICO igniter and DETROIT INJECTOR on lubricator bowl.

Thank you motorcanoe. Does anyone have any pictures of what my engine is supposed to look like or any information on the manufacturer?

Thanks

Richard, type in B F Brown under search and you will find some posted old advertisements and catalogue photo's of the engine.

Crankcase and cylinder mounting doesn't look correct for a B F Brown. Seems like all the other B F Browns have a gear driven timer and water pump. Unless this is a later model.

Keith and MotorCanoe,

If not a BF Brown, what do you think it could be?

Thanks

Have spent many hours trying to put a manufacturers name on this old Twin without succeeding as yet !
Just talking here nothing written in stone, I think that this is the first old marine engine like this to show up so far !
Its unique design that separates it from most all two cycle engines is its crankcase, the one piece rectangular box design with a web across the center giving excellent lower end rigidity yet still allowing the mounting on the stringers
to be even with the plane of the crankshaft is
exceptional.
I date this engine at about 1905-08.

2

A few manufacturers did have a similar lower end structure, Eclipse and Wonder to name two but they are different and I have excluded them as possible makers, they do help with the time frame ?
The flywheel was probably a piece of work as well, seems it had to be machined to go into, over or around that timer mechanism ?
It is a rare and cool old marine engine, at least we've seen it and can hopefully ID it one of these days !

RichardDurgee,

Thank you very much for your time in trying to identify this engine. Whomever built this engine put a lot of forethought into it, and it really does seem to be a sturdy engine. I appreciate your analysis of it.

If it helps at all, I found it in Northern NY where it was sitting for at least 40-50 years. I wish I had the flywheel and carb for it, they may give other clues as to what it is.

Next time I am near the engine, I will scour it again for any sort of marking, maybe there was something painted over that I could not see.

Thanks

I think I am going to let this engine go. What would be a fair asking price for an unknown engine?

Thanks
Richard

Has anyone come up with any other ideas of what this grey two cylinder could be/have been?

Thanks
