Hello, I own a classic car storage facility and sometimes we get interesting phone calls. I received a call from an elderly man looking to get rid of some VW parts. I go to his house and he takes me to see his VW beetle motor. I explained to him that it wasnt a beetle engine that it looks like a hit and miss motor pre 1920's. I bought the engine cause I love anything old and proceeded to research it.

It turns out its a Roberts Motors Model M 40HP motor with a Kingston carb. As you all now there really isnt much information on the web about the Roberts Motors company so I was hoping some one on here could help me out?Roberts Motors Model M

At first I thought it was a 10hp motor but when I lightly cleaned the badge it looked like 40. From some research I thought the 40hp were 4 cylinders.

after thinking about this engine and a little looking into I believe that the wrong tag was put on the engine when mfgrd or replaced at some time.

The tag says model M and 40 Hp, the model M engines had only one spark plug per cyl, a 3 1/2 inch stroke, the 40 Hp were 4 cylinder.

These are poor photos but show The Model P engines all having two spark plugs per cyl, a 5 inch stroke, and the twin was rated at 20 Hp ! maybe remove one plug and check stroke, Five inches would be expected ?

if the engine doesn't have an oiler then its probably a year or two newer.

I zoomed in the original image of the tag. It looks like its a 10 hp motor. I guess they used a fancy stamp for the number 1 with a line through the middle. I still can't find any information on a 10hp model.

Search for Bruce Stewart here on OME
Roberts was at Bruce Stewart for a while and the engines are almost identical.
Many years ago I had a Bruce Stewart identical to the engine above.
It had been dredged up out of the CT River near Brattleboro, VT and it wasn't much good. I think it ended up in the central or western part of Mass.

I got the 10 hp Roberts in trade from motorcar_manor. Don't really need but its a cool inboard. Would trade it for a rare outboard. B.J. Pawlaczyk email [email protected]
