Hello,
This is my first post on the forum and I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. I'm from Nebraska and have always liked old equipment and machinery. If it is old, rusty and unusual it gets my attention. I've restored quite a few single cylinder gas farm engines, tractors a 1929 Model AA truck and I am in the process of restoring a 1948 Chrysler Traveler. Just this past Monday I had the opportunity to take a look at a two cylinder marine engine made by the Roberts Motor Co. It is a Type O and is rated at 6 h.p.
The engine looks to be fairly complete but is missing the distributor cap. Not being familiar with marine engines I would appreciate any information you might be able to share with me. The gentleman that has it is in the mood to sell it but along with me has no idea as to the value. I've seen a lot of old iron in my time but boat motors like this are not at all common around here.
Perhaps this is a start of new hobby.
Thanks!

My first thought was the distributor was a modification but it looked familiar. The photo's are of Jamie's Roberts.

I think that it may be possible that the one on the engine is a Delco. I think I remember him saying it was but I didn't read the tag on it. Is the engine you are showing pictures of a 4 cylinder engine thus the 4 out going leads on the cap?
On the second picture in my post there is a square plate fastened with 4 screws on the lower part of the head. Is this normal or does it look like a patch.
Last question (for now) Any guesses as to the year?

It's a 2 cylinder, would only use two of the wires, didn't look to see if it had two or 4 lobes on the cam, if 4 two of the terminals would have to be grounded. That is a patch on the cylinder, if you take it apart see if it came from the inside, broken rod, or if it's just the outside.

Dave, That engine looks like an excellent project! There are many fine and knowledgeable men on this forum who will answer questions, plus there is a vast amount of information to be had via the search function. I wish you the very best of luck and many hours of fun.
Warren

Well it has been a while but I struck a deal on the engine and have brought it home with me. I appreciate all of the help and advice I have gotten both on and off of the forum. I am looking forward to spending some quality time working on it.

That reversing prop arrangement is a good thing to get as part of the "deal".
Congrats.

Hope to see you at one of the shows -
