My Dad has a 1958-59 5 1/2 hp Johnson Sea Horse outboard that runs perfectly. Model # is CD-15 and serial # is 1712821. Does this motor have enough antique value that we should sell it to one of you collectors, or should we just sell it with the old fishing boat it is on? Thanks.

Are you sure it isn't QD-21 ? That would be 10HP 1960.

QD-22 is 1961.
You can get some of the parts from marineengine.com at this link or this link where you will have to select year and horsepwer.
Some other parts you could get from a Johnson dealer. |

That motor would use Type C Gear Lube.
That water pump housing might be available from Johnson dealer, it appears to not be available as a aftermarket part.
You can post further questions on the MarineEngine.com board in the Johnson/Evinrude category.
This site OldMarineEngine.com is for old inboards, not outboards...

Hi!
Over 15 years ago, my dad gave my husband a Johnson Sea Horse. The serial # is 1818101 model # AD 12. Can you tell us what year it is, the horsepower and if we can find parts to it? It did run up until a few years ago. We would like to get it fixed to use, but also for sentimental value.

I see a few questions about value on these old 1950's Johnson motors, They are to new and plentiful to be valueable and to old to be a primary fishing motor, They did run great, I have 6 of them and the most I paid for any of them was $50. Most shops wont work on them because they are afraid they will no get paid when the bill is several hundred dollars. If you can repair them yourself, they can still be useful motors. Do not invest in them. use them if you can |

I have a 1948-50 2 1/2 horse Johnson Seahorse. It runs great for about 45 min. and then stalls out. It can be restarted, with priming, but will only run for about a minute. Any ideas what the problem is? |

This site is really for "inboards" not "outboards", but that model CD-14 is 5.5HP from 1957.
Carb kit would be 18-7043.

I have what I believe to be a 1937 4.5 hp johnson. It was disassembled years ago for restoration and still sitting in a box. It appears to be complete and restorable. It's a model LT37, SN 264253. Any idea as to it's value and would parts be available if I decided to tackle the project.

Tobey: Your motor is from 1956 and cost $241 when new. I have a manual, 302231, 4th edition. If anyone is interested, let me know. It is for sale. I had an old 1939 5 hp johnson seahorse but it was given away when my husband died. I found the manual he bought for lotsa bucks. |

It has the fishing motor value. to new to be collectable not old enough to be valueable
couple c notes maybe more to the fisherman that loves them. They do run really nice. put it on Ebay and go for the gold, I have 6 of them if you need more |

Seems paypal and eBay are not giving a poop about anyone lately. Buddy of mine bought some stuff and it wasn't packed at all, just thrown in a box. Totally destroyed 1 of the items. No help from paypal or ebay. Damage report and lots of pics to go with it. Still no help.
I have bought exactly 3 things on eBay. I suspect that will be the number for a looooog time.

Can someone who knows about this motor tell me what year it was manufactured and what it is worth. I don't need it and am looking to sell it at a fair price. It's been in my garage since 1998. The last time I used it, trolling on a 5 acre farm pond pushing a 12' semi-V boat, it ran fine and was perfect for trolling in that size of boat. |

best to place a local ad for a running fishing motor,I have 4 or 5 that I bought (and wish I hadn't) for less than a x note. Try your local craigslist ads for free. Be prepared to start it for your buyer or let it go cheap. They do run nice |

If the tag is missing from the side of the transom clamp take a look on the engine. There may be what looks like an aluminum core plug about 3/4 in dia that will have the SN and modlel number on it. |

Your engine is a 1954
Value depends on a lot of things
Was it used in salt water?
If it was in salt water it is in the less than 25 buck range as it will most likely be impossible to get apart.
No matter how it was stored if it hasn't been serviced in the last few years there is a 99.99 percent chance it needs ignition coils. (they are available)
The gas tank is it really clean inside? If not it can be a real pain to clean and make useable
So that being said, pull the plugs and see if it has apark. If it does put it in a barrel and see if it will run. That is as long as the tank is clean.
Fuel to oil mix is 1 qt of 30w NON DETERGENT oil to a full tank of gas. Fill the tank half full pour in the oil and then fill it the rest of the way.
If it runs it's most likely worth more to someone as a fishing motor than as a collectable.
Put an ad on Craig's List or the local paper and see what you get

engine generally seize from lack of oil or rust
in both cases the engine needs to come apart. even if it is broken loose an engine with rust will act as is it was full of grinding compound.
a cylinder that has been water stuck will have pits in the cylinder, and ring surfaces as well as the bearing surfaces. these will lead to a future failure in any event. As for lack of oil generally means is is scrap metal right from the get go. There are exceptions to every thing, but this comes from 45 years of working on engines
your mileage may vary. |

Mike,
If you use the search button at the top there is a thread on converting a 7 and a half. However your 5 and a half doesn't have removable transfer port covers and is a lot harder.
The best way on the 5 and a half is to remove the reed plate and modify the check valves so the pump can be operated from the port that was used to pressureize the tank.
My 2 cents worth it's easier to fix the old tank. Parts for the tank, connectors and 2 line hose are still available.
As to the safety aspect of the pressurized tank...
I have been around these for over 50 years and have not ever heard of one blowing up |

Thanks Ernie for the infomation but i dont have a tank or lines for the motor.I found infomation on how to convert the 5 1/2 to a single line by plugging one of the holes that was used to pressure the old style tank and adding a vaccume fule pump.Will try and post the resultes in a few weeks.I have the web site if any one is intrested in the infomation on converting this style of motor.

Is their any way to connect the pressurized tank to the motor by just running a line and making somthing to depress the air and gas valves on the tank to work?
It seames that when you would plug the 3 way connector to the tank that it would also push them in so has any one tryed to make it work like this?
These old connectors are very expensive. |

Just hook the fuel hose the the carb and the air hose to the fitting on the reed plate. I dont' know what you mean by depress the air and gas valves on the tank.
Here is a link to a web page for converting your engine to a fuel pump. The author of the page seems to think the old OMC tanks are bombs. Yup they could be but...I have been around them since the early 60s and have yet to see one blow up. Not saying they can't just...

The issue is with no connector you can't refuel your boat as the tank must be removed from the boat so not having a connector may not even be legal.

Ernie their are 2 little pins sticking out on the tank just above where you connect the connector on the tank when you push in one of them it will let gas come out i have some gas in it and after a while it builds enough pressur to let gas come out. |

That is a single line tank. Those are the air vents.
Dual line tanks dont' have a tank connector. Look at the link I posted above for pics of a dual line tank and connectors.

Mike,
This pic is of OMC engine fittings.
The fitting in the left is 2 line.
The fitting on the right is single line.
A single line tank will most likely have a similar fitting on it as the hose was removable from the engine and the tank.
It may also have a couple of small pins to open the tank vent when the hose is plugged onto the tank.
After market single line tanks will most llikely have a brass fitting and a vent in the cap.
The 2 line system will only have fittings on the engine and the engine end of the hose is NOT removable from the tank.

Ernie my tank must be a after market because it has the connection for the line on it.
If i can get the female end i should be able to connect the lines to the motor and just pulg and unpulg from the tank to put gas in the tank.

Your engine is a 1953
1 gt 30w non detergent oil to 6 gallons of gas.
Put 3 gallons in the tank add 1 qt of oil and then add the last 3 gallons mix by moving the gas nozzle around while adding the last 3 gallons.

For plugs just go to your local auto parts store and they should be able to use the actual application. The old Champion number was J-6-J they should be able to cross that to the new number.
Your motor is a 1958
The gas to oil ratio is 1 qt 30w non detergent oil to 6 gallons of gas.

50 to 1 WILL ruin your engine. Your engine is all plain bearings NOT roller or needle bearings. Plain bearings can not be run on 50 to 1. You should have little to no smoke on 16 to 1. Are you sure that is the ratio you are using?

I have a Johnson CD-19s motor that I have had sitting for several years. After finally starting it yesterday, (ran quite well considering how long it sat unused) ended up breaking part of the drive shaft. It looks like some kind of shock absorbing connection between the upper and lower shafts. (sorry I know very little about outboard motors and less about OLD outboards) After welding it back together, yes welded it solid, now we can't get the top of the drive shaft to seat back into the bottom of the motor. Do I need to remove the motor from the drive unit completely to do this? that's my next step ...
Also does anyone have a diagram of the drive line for this motor that would be appreciated. Thanks! |

Update:
Managed to fit it all back together and had it running. Misaligned the water pump and almost cooked it. Fuel also leaking from carb. My question now is where to find seals for the bottom end and the carb? My second question is: Is it worth rebuilding? what can I look at spending to replace all the seals? |

I just acquired a Johnson model AD-11. Looks in great shape though I haven't gotten it running yet. Changed the plugs, Used J-6J's. Are they okay?
I've got spark. Mixed marine oil to gas 24:1. Got gas in the bowl but don't see gas in carb throat when throttled. Sprayed starter fluid in cylinders, nothing, no attempt to start. Anyone have any suggestions? |

You may have better luck by going to the Antique Outboard motor club web page. www.aomci.org
We are mostly inboard related here.
However to answer your questions so far.
J6J plugs are good
24:1 gas oil mix is good.
How is the compression?
Also remove the recoil starter and then remove the small cover in the flywheel. Are the ignition coils cracked? If they are the spark you see at the plugs won't be enough. If the engine is original the coils most likely are cracked.
