I have recently purchased a what I believe is a Gray marine model 620 but the prior owner can not verify if it is a 6volt or 12volt sytem. As there are 2 6volt batteries (not connected yet) and the presence of some 12v accesories on the boat I am tempted to think it is a 12v system...but I know these engines were mostly 6v when new and I sure don't want to damage ignition , starter etc. by just trying. I can see no voltage listed on the Auto-lite generator (or alternator) how can I tell what the system voltage is?

Well after looking everywhere I could find (including coil), and finding no markings for voltage I tried a 6volt setup and got the engine started and running just fine. Is it posible that even if the engine was converted to 12v it could run with a 6v battery setup? The 6v system does not explain the 12volt lights/bilge pump etc. that are installed on the boat. Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Well starters are not changed when you go to 12 volt so,if you go back they still work.I have seen guys add a second battery in parelle when they want more power. This seems a simpler and cheaper solution, than a 12 volt conversion. You would need a series parrell switch (or your own jeery rig) to run the rest at 12volt.Did you find a battery cable with a battery post end on both ends?.If so you could still have a 12 volt system.

Thanks Larry... I guess I will leave well enough alone at 6 volts since engine is starting and running fine with that. I have found a 6 volt bilge pump and lamps to replace the 12volt ones on the boat. If you or anyone else has anty thoughts about that plan I would welcome any advice. I was looking at the Lovett pump..expensive but the only 6 volt I could find.

Taylor, I've used that same model with 12 volts. As Larry says the starter works great with 12 volts. The generater also worked with 12 volts. 6V wiring is heavier than 12V so it is more than adequate. When the generator fields are fed 12V the output will be of sufficient amperage and voltage. I did this with no problems. You can easily use a 12V igntion coil of 3 ohm resistance. Jack

Thanks Jack... After running the engine on 6volts this summer and having no trouble, I started thinking that the engine could use a tune up....enter Dave VanNess at Van Ness Engineering in NJ and and it looks if my 620 is going to have a full restoration. I am going to keep it 6volts but with new electronic ignition. Thanks for your advice though. Armed with that I may still opt for 12volts down the road.
