I am trying to wire this engine. On the starter there seems to be a connection for a larger wire directly on the casing. there is also a sileniod bolted to the starter with two smaller connections and what looks like a reset button. On top of the engine is the voltage reg. with amp, flow (which are hooked up) and batt. (which is open) The engine is 12 volt. Any ideas???

It sounds like you have a BENDIX starting system. They where used on ford cars, trucks,Massy harris tractors and many others in the 30's and forties.Your reset button is really a button to engage the selonid. The 2 small posts are connected(one on each side) to a push button,to engage the selonid. You should have one large post on the starter connect it to a big post on the selonid. The other big post goes to the battery. The regulator should have 3 posts ARM should go to the A or ARM post on the generator.Another post should be FIELD connect to F or FLD post on generator. The last is BAT connect to a good source going to the battery.
