Rod,
Your engine is based on the Hercules QXC block. Chris-Craft used them in the 1930s to make a 85hp model K. 3 3/8" bore. 4 1/8" stroke. 221CID.

Thanks for the information. Now I need to find a source for the missing parts, primarily a distributor and a carb which I assume had a flame arrestor. Parts only need to be cosmetically accurate for Museum display purposes.

This is a Sea Prince that I sold this summer, thought to be about 1938. I'll try to find what ever info I may still have left if you need it. This picture shows the carb you'll need and the flame arrestor.

The engine pictured appears to have a 2 bolt flange mount for a magneto. You can buy rebuilt ones from valubilt, but they would look like newer ones not an old mag.

Larry: I have added a picture of the Sea Prince distributor - is the magneto mounting consistent with your note?Distributor

The other hole must be for a generator. Spring clips often mean a delco distributor.

This is a picture of the other side of the Kermath, showing the distributor side. When I found the engine, it still had remnants of metal bands holding the engine to pieces of a wood skid. The engine had been rebuilt many years ago and had never been reinstalled in the boat, just set in the bottom until the boat rotted and the engine fell through to the ground. I'm still trying to find any paper info, but no luck yet. kermath

We have the Sea Prince instructions manual for sale on the MarineEngine.com site. Although I don't know if the one made in Canada is different than the one made in the US...

I have an original sea prince in a 1941 Mang open launch. It's based on a Hercules QXD-5 block.
It has an Auto-Lite IGW 4124 distributor. It also has a Stromberg SFM-3 carb with a Zenith spark arrestor. I'm actually looking for a cap and rotor for this dist also. The IGW distributor was used in a lot of older Willy's and Jeep motors. The 4124 is the application number so for cosmetic purposes it wouldn't matter as long as it was an IGW, I guess. The Stromberg SFM carb is very expensive to rebuild so a lot of them were switched to the cheaper to repair zenith 63's This means the SFM-3's should be out there in some numbers unrebuilt. Perfect for your application. By the way, if you find a good one, in useable condition, with the accelerator pump leather in good shape,...I could use the pump to get mine going again. I'll horse trade with you, or make an offer, either way. My motor was switched to 12 volt some time in the dim past and they CUT the aluminum shroud to accomodate the generator. I'd like to get one of those shrouds. If you come across a parted out motor for your missing bits, let me know. I'll do the same for you.
Good luck.

Rod:
My engine pictured above is the same as Steve's, Hercules QXD5M. It also has the same Stromburg carb and Auto-Lite distributor as his. I came across a 1937 and 1946 Kermath sales brochure. I'll photocopy the Sea Prince specifications pages and email them to you soon.

Hey Dave

I had problems getting a rebuild kit for my SFM 3 like you wouldn't believe. There is only one guy that makes the accelerator pump and he wanted 400 plus for a rebuild kit that included it. That's nuts. So I looked and looked and finally found this guy up in New York who, from the sounds of it, works out of his house, and he seems to have bought a huge pile of US military surplus parts that include a bunch of SFM carb stuff. The kit he sent me was still packed up in cosmoline and was as perfect as the day it was made 60 years ago. His name is Larry Isgro and he's in Brooklyn as far as I can remember. I'll dig around and see if I still have his number. Good luck.

A bit late entering this post however I may have some interesting information to share. I am in the process, and yes it is a process, of doing a complete restoration of two Kermath Sea Flyer engines (3 1/2" bore versus the 3 3/8" bore for the Sea Prince). Other than the bore, I believe these engines are identical. Model QXB-5M, S/Ns 705163 and 704354. These engines also used the Stromberg SFM3 carb, one of which I have completely rebuilt and the other 98% complete. What a job that was. I can email pictures if there is some interest. Yes, I paid the $400 for the rebuild kit and was not too pleased as many of the rebuild parts did not match but I did get the leather accelerator pumps which I needed badly (the guy wants $500 each for the brass floats..I fixed mine with a bit of solder). I would be very interested in contacting that guy in Brooklyn. I am also looking for distributor parts, the Sea Prince used the Autolite IGW 4024. One of mine has a bad cam. With any luck I hope to bring both engines back to life this Spring, I started back in 2003...but hey, it's a journey, right? Engines are out of a 1930 Hatley Craft, 32' Runabout which I am also restoring....someday. I am located in Syracuse NY.

Since the only un-rebuilt Stromberg SFM 3 carb.I could locate had a price of $1000, are there any other up draft carbs. for a Sea Prince that will fit on the manifold studs so that the museum display engine at least has a carb all be it not the correct one?

Rod, See my earlier post about the Zenith 63.
In digging around to find repair parts for my SFM 3 I found that a quick fix was to change to the zenith so a lot of people did that. I don't know anything about them at all, but with the internet you should be able to scare one up fairly easily. Also, I'd like to ask Kelvin which magnetic p/u he used. My engine is also 12 volt and I'd like to switch over also. Which make and specific model number did you use?

Thanks Steve for reminding me about the Zenith 63 swap for SFM 3. Did you rebuild your SFM 3? If not is it for sale for use on our museum cosmetic restoration?

Rod, I did get a kit from Mr. Isgro like I mentioned in my earlier post. It worked just fine and I got the engine running perfectly. It's in the boat now and believe it or not I haven't launched it yet. I want to take it to Tahoe for it's initial launch, but we won't be moving out West for another year or two. Good luck with your quest to find an sfm3. I used to check ebay for them just for fun and did see a few come up occasionally. That's your best bet.
