Anyone have a photo or ad of a 4-Atlantic? I am making a scale model of my father's boat, which is long gone, and have little to go on re the engine except memory. Any help would be appreciated.

Rennie,

I have moved your question to the Atlantic category. If you look at other posts in this category and do a search of this board using the search link above you should find numberous 4HP Atlantic photos.

There is also Atlantic literature available that will have rough dimensions, such as flywheel diameter, etc.

Various collectors have Atlantic engines and could probably take some specific dimensions for you once you get to the point of knowing which dimensions you need...

Keep us posted! We would love to see the work in progress and the finished model!

Rennie,

See this link from this category for basic dimensions.

Here is a picture from my files... I'm not sure this is a 4HP, maybe someone else will know.

Andrew, thanks very much for this and the other info. I'm no expert, but this looks like it to me, and those specs you referred to will also be very useful. By the way, this photo reminds me that the 4-Atlantic holds the origins of an expression in my family: one of the quirks of that last old Atlantic my dad owned was that when it heated up you had to press the toe of your boot against the ignitor to prevent it from mis-firing and stalling. So, when my seven brothers and I are saying farewell to each other after a chat or visit, we often say, "keep your foot in the ignitor" as an expression of encouragement.

thanks again

Rick,

That is a great family expression!

Thanks for sharing it with us!

I know I have seen models of single cylinder Atlantic engines before... but I don't recall where. Maybe someone else will provide some info.

Regards,
Andrew

Hello:

My knowledge with respect to these engines is limited. I am looking for an ignitor for a 4 atlantic. Any information about where to buy one or where to obtain the specifications so I can make one would be appreciated.

Thanks John

The company is still in business and does have a few parts left. There are at:

Lunenburg Industrial Foundry & Engineering (Life)
902-634-8827
53 Falkland,
Lunenburg, NS B0J 2C0

If that does not work out, I may be able to find a used one in my junk box

Hello James - I have a 1915 and a 1920 Atlantic owners/instruction manual in my collection. Would either be of interest?

James
I have a operators manual (includes parts diagrams/listings) as well as some other literature. I am willing to copy and mail or scan and email. If someone with a web page wishes to post the scans, I will forward as required.

This may sound like the mussings of a nut, but I am going to say it anyway. I have an Atlantic 4 in perfect running condition. My plan is to polish, paint and finish it to a work of art. Then I would like to display it running in a motor vehicle instead of a boat. I was thinking of constructing something that resembles an 1890 era 3 wheel car like an early Benz. What do you think? I'm still searching to see if anyone has done this yet. My bigger problem seems to be finding suitable old looking wheels to put under my vehicle and I want it to look original and old. Not some concocted bear trap. Nuts ah?

Noseworthy,

I have had the same thought myself. A radiator will be required for cooling. I was going to use 4 wheels and my choice was going to be motorcycle wheels. Three front wheels and one rear wheel with the sprocket so that chain drive could be used. Only one rear wheel would be driven. That way you don't have to mess with a differential.

Keep me posted.

Thanks John, I forgot about a differential. Nothing like throwing a guy a curve before the job is even off the board.
There is one thing. That key that is in the flywheel, how is it removed. I tried wedges but it seems to be tight in place and the head started to bend. Is there a short cut to remove it in order to pull the flywheel?

Frank,

One word to the wise. Never remove the flywheel on an Acadia or an Atlantic. There is no need.
