I have a 4 hp Atlantic in the rebuild stage. Should I hone the cylinder ID before installing the piston? From the "Old Marine Engines' book it noted that the cylinders were 'polished' so I don't know if that is honed or polished. Any experience out there?

Roger, a lot depends on the condition of the cylinder and if it had compression before you started. Are you replacing rings, was the cylinder rusty?

The engine was rebuilt in 1977 at Lunenburg and then stored in a basement in Edmonton Alberta for 37 years. No rust other than some surface rust on the cylinder but I don't see any hone pattern on the walls.
I assume there was good compression circa 1977.

Not planning on replacing rings, all look good and no running hours since rebuild. I assume they were new at rebuild and as I say look real good.

A light honing to get a crosshatch pattern shouldn't hurt.

I went to machine shop a few weeks ago i done a full rebuild on a 5 atlantic and i found a broken ring. Took the cylinder and one of the rings with me and they made a ring for me out of some cast. I had to do some filing but no issues.
