I am doing research on a 50 ft, boat that was built in 1913, it had twin screw props. The information from the Steamboat Inspection Service that I have located says it had a 16 H. P. gas engine. Would this have required twin engines with props going in opposite directions or could it have been operated with a single engine? Thanks for any help.

With a boat that big, a single 16 HP engine would probably have been insufficient. In all likelihood, there were 2 engines.
The drive arrangement for 2 props, from one engine is also quite complicated, compared to 2 engines, and in any case , if there were a failure of 1 engine, the second one could probably get you home.
